Calve pain during run at the gym.?

Hi guys and girls, im pretty new to the gym, when im running im forced to stop after around 0.3k due to pain in my calves, front lower shin (virtually the joint between my leg to foot. i can remove this pain by pausing the run and re stretching, this helps and gets me going however another 0.2k on and its back again, and constant re stretching is needed, this then stops me running, will this pain go, can i fix it? i know its muscle not joint pain because as i said a stretch sorts me out temporarily Thanks. Scott

I can think of 3 possible causes. The simplest is that you are just unfit and the gastrocnemius muscles, which attach to the tendo achilles just get sore with the the unaccustomed activity. The second is that electrolyte imbalance is causing rapid muscle spasm though the distance appears a little short, finally that you might be suffering from intermittent claudication, which implies that there might be a problem with peripheral vascular insufficiency.

The first thing would be not to take a painkiller. You need to know when it does and doesn't hurt, masking the pain will only fool you. You sound to be a serious runner, so taking days off seems to be hard to do(it practically kills me) But I look at it like this, it's better to miss a couple of days then to develope a strained muscle and have to sit out for a period that could last 2 to 4 weeks. I suggest lots of stretching and icing and don't forget to elevate. I would baby the muscle until it seems to inprove. At that point still don't run, try something else that doesn't have the same impact such as swimming or bicycling.

it almost sounds like you have minor 'shin splints'... which is quite common when starting a running routine. Try slowing down a little. Walk for a while, and speed up your pace until your body gets use to this new routine.

It could also be muscle cramping, which can occur from being dehydrated or lack of potassium. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water, and try eating a banana about 1 hour before your workout to see if that helps. Good luck!

i was having knee and shin problems when i was in my aerobics class, and i was told I didn't have the correct shoes( and yes they were athletic shoes) shoes could be your problem, either that or you may just be out of shape. ( not to be mean, just trying to help)
