short answer: get VLC Media Player at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ because it will play many formats that Windows doesn't play natively.
long answer: You need the proper codec in order to view the avi file. The tricky part is that the avi file format is actually just a container for combining different audio and video streams. It's most likely an xvid file, but there's a chance that it has a different encoding. You can try to find the right codec and tell Windows Media Player to point to it for that file, or you can download VLC which has the codecs built in already.
