It depends on the location. What area are you wondering about? There were different people accused for different reasons in different areas of the world. Parts of mainland Europe just wanted to kill off some Jews, In the Americas (Massachusetts mainly) there was just religious fervor (My great x 8th Grandmother was hanged in 1692 in Salem). There were a few isolated incidents in Canada, but they were mostly race related (Indians or mixed race). This is not an all inclusive list, there are many more.

Anyone - if you knew how to make mint tea for indigestion you could be accused of witchcraft - or if you took the fancy of another woman's husband or your chickens produced more eggs or you liked to walk in the early morning or you picked mushrooms.

They really weren't fussy about who was accused of witchcraft - problem was - they didn't bother to stipulate whether "witchcraft" was good or bad so anyone doing anything slightly different became a "witch". Also anyone that had enemies was in real trouble!
