Is the habit of reading books is on the decline since all TV channels offering serials/talk shows etc?

Some two months back, I had been to a Book Fare at Chennai, where I could found a lot of youngsters flocking the stalls for books, particularly for scientifically oriented books including scientific fictions.

Whereas, in our routine life, due to on line reading and 'MENACE" by TV channels, it seems habit of reading is already on the decline amongst mid-aged and elder people.

How you view on this?

P.S : I am asking this question for the second time, as in the first instance, I could get only two replies(of course at that time my Contacts' list was also small).

Update:

Mathangi Rani, Thank you for the suggestions, but pleae don't try to change me into a serious man. I always try to remain as jovial, light hearted person.

Update 2:

Matahngi Rani, why are you serious now? Oh, comeon, it is just a fun. Nobody able to change me into a serious man. Don't ask 'pardon me' etc.For you, one light question on movies in there. Answer it hilariously. OK?

Update 3:

Sakunta Madam, She is a small girl in 6th Std. The light qns I'm asking is for them only.

you are right. yes, the habit of reading books is already declined on several reasons and the tv channels is one of them. On some 70 and 80 years ago, the people of tamilnadu diverted their attention in promoting the languages, bhakthi marga, and particularly srilanka tamil elders. we got many wonderful stories, histories. Now, the tv channels spoiling entire tamilnadu for showing unworthy serials, worst separate comedy channels, music channel etc.,by which the people's

attention fully diverted from reading books, magazines.

The loss of knowledge, making fully laziness, talking about cinemas (including you since you asked a question about an actor and his rest house in the name of ashram, putting Cino song questions instead of quoting kamba ramayana, villi bharatha, or kalki's, chandilyan's, akilan, parthasarathi's or political elders like kamaraj, rajaji, kakkan etc., a learned man like you attracted means) instead of valuable and worthy. The tv is the reason.

Besides, we got all novels, all religious, spiritual books and other important books available in the computers. No need to purchase for reading. How many attends the book fair exhibitions ? How many interested to buy books ? There were a lot of cheap editions.

i like your questions because sometimes you are asking about pilgrimage, tourism, and of course many meaningful and injecting like needling in the plantain fruit cine matters.

Anyway, this tv is taking us to an unknown destination, no clue available to escape. wonderfully there are more than 25 tamil channels and as you said telecasting serials/talk shows etc., what is the result ? time waste, current expenditure, pending works, mind upset (when hero laughs, we are laughing, when heroine weeping, we also weeping, when villain talks to heroine our attention never scatters) when we will show our people a good way ? who knows ?

my heartfelt thanks to you for floating a good and useful question, and i am expecting more, since i know you can.

(copy from you) Hooooow iiiiiisssst iiiiiit ?

@Asker..i feel sorry for hurting your feelings. you need not change. i like your writings and answers and remarks, so that i am continuously answering your questions. i don't want to loss my good books. please pardon me.

No, with the weather in Australia, it's too good to sit indoors or watch TV.

Everywhere you walk you always see people reading books. At the park, the beach, at a cafe, on a train and even at the pub.

I read too, I've read over 28 novels this year, I'm quarter of the way through another now. Hopefully I will finish reading it before Christmas, to watch the cricket.

  • No I wont accept! Books are not tv shows to decline in the TRB RATING! Books are the best and better than TV! Television only entertain the people but cant create creativity among the people and everyone knows that! If I m anything today, that are only due to books only.

Ebooks took a big toll on book sales. Cost of publishing book is going up because of hike in paper, labour and other printing materials. So online reading is getting popular, some people are predicting that newspaper circulation will completly go away in another decade and everything will be delivered either to your inbox or you have to login to their website to read news. Mobile phones are already delivering breaking news.

its nice habbit to read books.

thanks for askings nalla nalla Question anna.

    Nanba,

I don't think TV channels really reduced reading! Now they have mobile lending libraries, so you won't see many mid aged people outside shopping for books and nobody want to go out in scorching sun/pouring rain to buy books.

Books are good companion and best travel buddies. I do online + book reading. To survive with low cost, I recommend my friends to buy used books. For story books you can always rent it from local waste paper mart for less than Rs.1.

Coming to TV, 1 picture is equivalent to 1000 words. I don't watch serials and other shows, National Geography, SCI-FI (movies) and Discovery are my favorite. Occassionaly I do watch Disney cartoon movies. They are informative programs and our mind can understand visual programs more than reading books.

So it all depends on what you watch on TV. I wouldn't agree with declining book reading, it is just taking another dimension that's all.

    Amudham:

Don't ever smell old books, because usualy there will be bugs inside (Silver fish is one common insect) and you don't want that in your nostrils. Sometime fungus too!

Don't lick your fingers to flip pages, recycled papers are highly used with low grade dyes and that's not good for anyone.

It is decreasing by little by little because of some programs in TV. They know how to attract people. But there are many voracious readers who spend reading books most of their free time. Nowadays children very much addicted to TV due to cartoons. Reading books is really a nice thing. I love books. If u give me a choice to watch TV or read books. I will surely read books.

    Are u a voracious reader?

    thalaiva !

reading has come down because of TV viewing but only due to a limited extent, but the main reason is every thing is available on net at a click of button e.g i bing/google/ wiki for rajnikanth i get the full details as below (in case of books i have to select, buy, borrow or steal to get any details)

12 December 1950),[1] professionally known by his stage name Rajinikanth (Tamil: ரஜினிகாந்த்; Kannada: ರಜನೀಕಾಂತ್; Marathi: रजनीकांत), is an Indian film actor. He received India's third highest honour, the Padma Bhushan, for his contribution to Indian cinema.[2] He is best known for his mass popularity and appeal, largely drawn from his mannerisms and stylized delivery of dialogue in films. Other than acting, Rajinikanth worked as a screenwriter, film producer, and also a playback singer. Apart from his film career, he is a philanthropist and also serves as an influence in the politics of Tamil Nadu. bla bla bla

Rajinikanth debuted as an actor in 1975 bla bla bla ...highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan.[6][7]

NO! book lovers are still there in our place.i feel books are better than T.V becoz in a book u can imagine (a house or tree or anything) everything in u'r favorite colour and shape.but in the T.V they can portray it in their own way and u must agree with it.i can assure u that 80% of the yougsters today LOVE books but maybe they are not reading useful books which are part of literature, they read fictions, thrillers, crime etc.

    Reading is a habit.

Nothing can change it or decline.

I read my favorite magazines and news papers as usual.

Every thing has their own time.
