You've read wrong. NO breed is truly hypoallergenic. Breeders claim these breeds are LESS allergenic but it really depends on how allergic the person is to cats and how much dander that particular cat is producing.

You can find reputable breeders listed at http://tica.org/public/breeders.php Expect to pay at LEAST $800 for a pet quality kitten of any of those breeds you listed.

No breeder will allow you to buy a kitten as a gift, though, nor will they sell a kitten to a teenager. And is your boyfriend a teenager living with his parents? If so then his PARENTS need to be the ones buying him a kitten. They're the ones who will be paying to feed it, take care of its vet bills and ultimately the ones caring for it when he moves out or goes to college. If there's "several" people in the family allergic to cats how do you know they even want one in the home?

There are no hypoallergenic cats. Allergens from cats come from a variety of sources - dander, saliva... Even a hairless cat can cause allergy problems. You would need to have the family members around each cat to see if it will cause allergy problems. Any breeder who tells you their cats don't cause allergic reactions is lying and is not a good breeder.

It's also a bad idea to give cats as gifts, especially during all the activity and stress that goes along with Christmas.

Are you sure your boyfriend will take care of a kitten for its entire life? Is he prepared for that much responsibility? Can he afford all the care? Have you discussed this with him and his family? Is anyone in his family willing to take allergy medicine and clean frequently?

If all of that is satisfied then consider making a certificate for your boyfriend and giving him that for Christmas. Then after the holiday craziness is over you can take him and his family to a shelter or rescue to look for a cat. The breed part is probably not going to make that much of a difference.

BUT I hope you will reconsider the entire plan. There are much better gifts. Pets are living creatures that require a life time of care which means vet bills, feeding quality food, and attention. Please come up with a different idea. When you have your own place and a steady income you can get a kitten or two for yourself.

Do not get your boyfriend a kitten for Christmas until you've talked to his parents about it first.
