How would you break the news to a parent that you're a smoker, after turning 18?

I've been 18 since the beginning of August, and I'm still hiding it from my dad. My mom knows, though, but I'm tired of hiding it, when I'm past old enough. I've been smoking for over 4 years, and my dad is a bit strict. I don't know the best way to break it to him without it being obvious that I've been smoking for a long time. It just seems like such BS to say, "hey, I spontaneously picked up a pack of cigarettes at the store, turns out I really like them. Not that I've been doing it before now, though..." Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

P.S.- Please don't tell me I shouldn't be smoking. I know I'll die. That's kinda the point...

sorry, i have no idea. im 27 and my parents "dont know" that i smoke! well im sure they do since my car and my hair smells of it every day. i can't blame it on all of my friends smoking around me anymore hehe. my parents are very very strict too which is why i haven't come out of the smoking closet. and also the fact that my dad had cancer a few years ago...it'd break their hearts if i actually admitted it. i even work with a 55 year old who has to hide his smoking from his wife!!

either way, there really isn't a 'good' way to break the news to the person who loves you the most in the world. no matter how much you sugar coat it or whatever, it's still saying the same thing at the end of the day.

I wouldn't know, my parents didn't care enough to care. After I was addicted for 38 years I got the angry enough to quit. Not only did I waste TONS of money on that leagle dope, but there are bad wrinkles around my mouth from sucking on a butt so many times a day. There are other things that I could have sucked on for that oral gratification- no- I mean like lollipops! I should have put fifty cents away each time I bought a pack of cigarettes to pay for the face lift that they caused the need for. Then there is the 'lung' thing. I will not even mention that kissing a smoker really is like licking an ashtray. Until you figure out that you deserve better than lung cancer, why not just own up to your dirty little dumb deeds. Good luck

Lol, that's a tough one. My parents found out by busting me red handed. I was 16 and went down to the park with friends. My mom noticed I'd left my phone maybe 3 hours after I left, and drove down to drop it off. Boy was she mad when she saw me with a cigarette. Didn't help I was drunk when she caught me, she started yelling and I threw the cigarette at her (somehow she didn't notice I reeked of alcohol). Then she made me tell my dad. I just was like, "ya, I smoke, what are you gunna do about it? my school is an open campus, and you can't drive me, and I work so ya...." They didn't speak to me for a week, but they never bothered me about it again (just told me not to do it in their yard).

But, ya, I don't know. How about just being straight up and honest with him? Your an adult, it's your choice. Leave your pack somewhere, and when he asks about it, tell him you smoke, you know the risks and you'll quit when your ready. What is he going to do?

How about this: "Mom, dad, wanted to let you know I'm smoking now." It's quick, clear, gets the job done.

You're not hiding anything. It is obvious you are smoking, you reek of it. You smell like an ash tray. Your father knows already...your stench precedes you into any room.

how about, "mom, dad, I've recently decided that I'm going to intiate a slow & grueling death for when I "grow up", just in case ya haven't smelled it on me recently...";; K? how's that??
