Should everyone be allowed to vote?

One of the main problems in the world is that political leaders are chosen by the public. Politicians are representatives of the public. So if politicians are bad quality does that mean the it is the public's fault for voting them into office? I suggest that we limit voting rights to people with an IQ >= 100, this would mean that idiots would not be voted in to office by idiots. If you think about it the majority of problems in the world are created by dumb people making dumber decisions.

Democracy in my opinion is to important to be left up to the average Joe Sixpack. Do you agree, do you believe that only certain people should be allowed to vote. Not race, salary, class, gender but intelligence.

Update:

I see Ed would loose his vote under my proposal.

Update 2:

Justg, I didn't talk about race, so ignorant black and ignorant whites would loose their vote. I frankly think that if a request of 100+ IQ was required the GOP would go out of business.

Update 3:

Rosered, did you lean punctuation at school?

Update 4:

Ok I understand the paying tax part, but do you believe limiting it to IQ would make a better country? I think it would, do you think in 2004 GW Bush would have won the election if he didn't have the support of low IQ people? Does anyone think that Sarah Palin would get votes from people (without agendas) who have an IQ over 100?

Update 5:

So Bulldog, you think the people who can't even name a newspaper, can't name their capital city, think the global warming is a hoax, believe that the world was created in 7 days by a sky fairy should control the country?

Everyone but the dumb rednecks that support Palin. You can find them in any trailer park in Appalachia.

The IQ test doesn't even measure intelligence. It is just a number that even the best scientists can't agree means anything. And many politicians are Ivy League grads, so they prove that just being "intelligent" doesn't mean a dang thing. Also, maybe we should just limit voting rights to Joe Sixpack. Think about it. He is most likely a middleclass American with a family, a low paying job and almost no power. Regardless of who he votes for, he won't get paid under the table, he isn't a puppeteer of the government, and he won't be able to finaggle huge subsidies out of the government. Where as a lot of the higher class, highly educated doctors, CEO's and bankers would have some power over the government and can easily buy a politician, Joe Sixpack cannot.

We have a problem that those that get handouts vote for more handouts. This is bad as we know that politicians will cater to the crowd that is easiest to get them elected. So there must be a mechanism to stop growing handouts as these threaten the nation's health. The proposed "net no tax paid" as a disqualify-er of voting rights should be considered seriously. Note that this mechanism would also guard against those moneyed classes who use the insane tax system to effectively pay no tax from passing more laws to favor them.

Dweebs? You imply just like the dweeb who ask this question? You are similar to obama. You do not feel that everyone has a proper to vote on this nation. I think sorry for either one of you. Because if it got here to the way in which you desired it, you 2 might be the primary dweebs not to get to vote. Get over yourself. America is a nation that I am proud to mention offers everyone the proper to vote. If you do not find it irresistible, then both do not vote, or depart.

I agree with out to lunch. There should be a minimum age limit, but IF you don't pay taxes, you should not have any vote on who you vote for. The more people become reliant on government, the more supporters government will gather. That is what Obama's purpose is with health care reform.

Only people who actually pay taxes (if you get a full refund and more, you DON'T pay taxes), are in America legally, are sane, understand what they are actually doing and are sober should be allowed to vote.

People who pay no taxes have no right to decide how someone else's taxes should be spent. Illegals have no rights, period. Crazies, drunks and the ignorant not voting should not need to be explained.

I don't know that I would go the IQ route to determine who getsto vote, but I do believe that there should be limitations.

If you don't have a job, you don't vote.

If you are on the government dole, (i.e. welfare, food stamps, etc.), you don't vote.

If you are under treatment for any mental disorder, you don't vote.

If you don't have at least a 6th grade education, you don't vote.

If you are not from this country and have gained acess illegally, you don't vote.

If you don't pay taxes, you don't vote. (I'd be happy to be excluded for that reason, by the way.)

You ever hear of an educated fool because My Dad always said you have to learn something besides a bunch of book smarts. He said experience is worth its weight in gold.He said you learn just as much through mistakes as you would will ever learn from a book full of someone 'mistakes.I am college educated and I remember Dad saying that when I thought I was smarter than him.I believe anyone who votes needs to know alot about the background of whom they vote for.A person should never vote for anyone because of color. That is the most asinine reason ever.

The idiots in the white house are HARVARD GRADUATES.Intelligence is not wisdom. " Joe Sixpack" has a family and a job and wants what is best for his family. THAT should be the best guage for voting. And yet the " great society" whose only exercise is wal;ikng to the mailbox to get their welfare checks has the same vote as " Joe Sixpack".

I disagree strongly. Universal Suffrage means just that. Any adult citizen can vote. You can lose your right to the franchise through a felony conviction or being declare incompetent to handle your own affairs, but that's it.

your elitist attitude is part of what is currently wrong in this country, those currently in power think they are better equipped to make decisions that control and effect your lives than you

EDIT: irishinvenice, believe it or not i tend to agree that people of low intelligence should not be allowed to vote (the last presidential election should be enough evidence of that) i know enough to realize that part of the problem with the general attitude exhibited by people like you assumes that you are in the higher percentile when that is not always the case. also, even if you are that does not make you better equipped to decide things for other people
