The Melancholy of Haruhi suzumiya?

Can someone give me a brief and "to-the-point" summary of what this show is about? I've read some summaries but they all sound different for some reason.

I've heard that it's a good show, but I watched the first bit of it and it just seemed weird.

Anyway, if you've seen the show, I would appreciate if you could tell me about it without giving any major spoilers. Also tell me your opinion, if it's worth watching or not, etc.

Please and thanks.

    The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya:

The answer from JL contained a lot of spoilers lol.. I will tr giving it without spoilers

Haruhi Suzumiya: "Till I was in my middle school I always felt like the centre of the world, My world where all my family, relatives ,grandparents, neighbours gave me utmost attention, Then One day we went to a football match in tokyo... I realised how small I was, I felt like a rice grain sitting among the tousands packed in the ground, Then I went home and searched for the number of people living in Japan, in the world and realised how unimportant one person can be,,,"

---This is the first volume of haruhi-- The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya ...

The only thing she does not know is that the world is revolving around her will.

The general plot is that the universe revolves around Haruhi except she isn't aware of it. If she becomes bored, she would unconsciously remake reality to fit her liking, which would destroy the current reality she lives in. People like koizumi (esper), Yuki (alien), and Mikuru (time traveler) are aware of this and tries to keep her entertained and distracted. Kyon is just dragged into all of this.

The 1st season (14 episodes) contains one arc that revolves strongly around this plot, with various other arcs about random things. The order of broadcast is mixed, so episodes may not be consistent with each other, with episode 1 about making a movie and episode 2 being the beginning of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" arc.

I found it worth watching, although some may find it overrated.

On the other hand, the 2nd season is entirely different. All of the "Endless Eight" episodes, except for the first and the last, should be avoided. These episodes are a complete waste of time. The other episodes of Season 2 that is not "Endless Eight", revisits certain parts of the first season, so those are also worth checking out if you enjoy the first season.

it's a story revolving around haruhi, kyon, mikuru, yuki and itsuki.

kyon is a normal human, mikuru is a time traveller, yuki is an alien(to put it simply), itsuki is an ESPer.

haruhi is some sort of god or omnipotent being. and the anime is about the things they do to keep her mentally stable(not bored) and prevent her from destroying the world(since she is said to have the power to create or destroy the world).

by chronological order, they prevented the world from being destroyed and mikuru, yuki, itsuki all confirms that kyon is the 'chosen one'. they went back in time to ensure that history happens as haruhi remembers it, go to deserted island on a trip only to witness a murder case. experience summer holiday 15000+ times(the endless eight). shoots a film for the culture festival and enjoys the culture festival.

there are certain small hints about haruhi liking kyon, but not explicitly shown at all
