Changing the ignition switch on a Chevy S10?

My husband had to change the ignition on his S10. Its all put back together, and it will turn over but it won't stay running for more than 5 seconds. It has anti-theft and an airbag. He's positive he put it back together right. Its there something we (he) can do to get it running or just give up and tow it to the shop?

Thanks.

Update:

The basics have nothing to do with this problem. Its something to do with the new ignition that was installed. Probably with the anti-theft.

We don't know how to get the anti-theft to accept the new ignition.

did it do it before the new igntion switch ?????? if not then if u do not care for security system depending on year if u see chip in key u can measure the resistiance and go to radio shack and buy a varible resistor to match ur key go to bottom of dash pull cover off fin the the 2 white wires and cut them the tie in ur resistor and u should be ok most times when people change the ignition switch they do it and dont realize the wires are broke going threw colum if it's newer type ur gonna have to take colum apart and see if there and any broke wires beacuse this type of securtiy system uses a megnetic field to determine if u have right key if wires ok replace the key sensor ring that goes around ur key cylinder . best way to determine if it's ur security system disableing ur vehicle is when running see is securty is flashing or on if so it's deff security system on gm the theft doesnt disable the starter it disable the fuel system good luck

The ignition is under the column, it is a wiring harness, the switch it self has to removed with an inverted torx screw driver .

take it to a dealership, you need to have your theft deterrent system programmed. this takes about 20 min and will probably cost you under $100

    Check the basics first.
