How do you read the gauge on an electric pallet jack?

The gauge starts at 0 and goes up to 20. It also says D.C. Amperes underneath the numbers. This gauge is always at 0 until we plug it in to be charged. When we plug it in it usually jumps to the 10 - 20 range. What is this gauge supposed to tell me and how do i interpret the numbers into something i can understand?

Update:

Hey thanks for the info it really helps a lot!

This tells you how many amps the battery is taking on charge. When the battery is very flat it will take more current, but this will fall as the battery charges. You can tell when the battery is charged as the ammeter reading will fall to a minimum and settle, the battery is now fully charged and ready for use.
