What computer should I get?

I'm not sure if I should get a netbook or a cheaper laptop. My two main uses would be internet and writing with word. Is the keyboard on a netbook too small to write comfortably with? Also I would be using CD's from time to time but can't I always buy an external drive? How much RAM would I need? Thank you.

Update:

If you could specify a specific model too that would be great. I did forget to mention I kind of would like it to be on the smaller end because I'd like to take it with me.

I think a nice netbook would be perfectly fine. Many netbooks have almost full-sized keyboards. And yeah, you can always buy an external drive. If you don't mind a small screen, go for the netbook. If you suddenly decide to do something other than internet or typing, you can get a cheap laptop.

I would suggest you to get a notebook with DVD drive, a small size (13.3) notebook will serve your need. The key boards are the same for netbook and notebook. For your purpose, 1G of RAM will do, but 2G will work better.
