Did this require a toenail removal?
I have had an infected toe for over a week now. Symptoms: redness, swelling, pain to the side and below the cuticle. (no discharge) I went to a podiatrist as it was making it difficult for me to wear a shoe and he decided to remove the nail right then and there. The reason for the infection is still unknown! Does this appear to have been an overly aggressive treatment?

I would go to a foot doctor and see what they say.
Your toe could be infected.
You could have a ingrown toenail which part of it needs to be removed.

Well, I'm not a doctor, but maybe trying an antibiotic and soaks and antibiotic ointment might have been worth a try. However, I would say that since you had quite a bit of infection going on, that he probably did the right thing, it is possible things were so far gone with the nail that the only way to resolve the infection and not have it come back would be to remove it. I am sure it was painful and it is probably painful in recovery...but if that infection wasnt stopped, it would only spread and get worse, maybe even get in your blood stream, and no one wants that. It is probably better he did what he did, despite the pain involved...infection like that is never a good thing. Hope you feel better soon.

Soak your toes in hydrogen peroxide. That will kill the fungus. Keep your toes within the peroxide till it stops effervescent. When it stops effervescent, replenish the peroxide and soak till your toes are not making the peroxide bubble. The fungus lives underneath toenails and underneath calluses. If you've got calluses to your toes, make certain you get rid of them first.. People's toes stink considering the fact that of fungus residing underneath calluses..
