Algebra 2 Word Problem Help?

Okay. Help me here, please. This is gibberish through my eyes.

A pet store receives a shipment of pet foods at the beginning of each month. Over a three month period, the store received 1770 pounds of dog food, 1165 pounds of cat food, and 365 pounds of bird seed. Write and solve a system of equations to find the number of pounds of pet food in each of the three shipments.

Then there's a chart:

Dog food- 1st shipment: 60% 2nd shipment: 50% 3rd shipment: 50%

Cat food- 1st shipment: 25% 2nd shipment: 35% 3rd shipment: 45%

Bird seed- 1st shipment: 15% 2nd shipment: 15% 3rd shipment: 5%

Thanks so much for any help...

I'll do cat and bird seed for you. total cat food is 1165.

and 1st shipment of cat food is 25%.

    So... 0.25 x 1165 <-- 1st shipment

    2nd shipment is 35%

    so... 0.35 x 1165 <--- 2nd shipment

    3rd shipment is 45%

    so... 0.45 x 1165 <---3rd shipment

    365 bird seeds.

    1st shipment is 15%

    so... 0.15 x 365 <---1st shipment

    2nd shipment is 15%

    so... 0.15 x 365 <--- 2nd shipment (same as 1st shipment)

    3rd shipment is 5%

    so... 0.05 x 365 <---3rd shipment

    x is the first even number x + 2 is the second even number and x + 4 will be the third even number all of these numbers add up to 66 so x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 66 3x + 6 = 66 3x = 66 - 6 3x = 60 x = 60/3 x = 20 So the three numbers are 20, 22, and 24 M = 4S M = 2S + 20 4S = 2S + 20 2S = 20 S = 10 Son = 10 years therefore Man = 40

    let

x= total lbs in the first shipment

y= total lbs in the second shipment

z= total lbs in the third shipment

so, first look at the dogfood

we know that 60% of first shipment is dogfood, and the other percentages, and we know the total dogfood so we can right a dogfood equation

    .6x+.5y+.5z=1770

the other two equations (cat and bird) work the same

then you have three equations with three unknowns and you can solve them in a number of ways (combination, substitution, matrix, etc)

    good luck
