Do some dogs have their teeth filed down?

I got a Doberman from a lady who had bought him from a breeder but then was no longer able to take care of him so I took him in. I looked at his teeth and it looks like someone had the tips filed down. Has anyone heard of people doing this before?

Update:

He is two years old. He does chew on things a lot, so the normal wear makes sense. I am glad someone didn't do that to him.

One of my Dobermanns recently had one tooth filed down after she cracked it to remove the sharp edges & salvage the tooth to avoid extraction.

I cannot think of a reason which would necessitate all the teeth being filed down...maybe the dog wore the enamel down with persistent chewing.

Well to be blunt, "gangsters" sometimes file their dogs teeth down to points, but not flat.

The only instance where I've heard of a dogs teeth being filed down was in the case of a German Shepherd herder. Or rather, a herder that uses German Shepherds. He has his dogs teeth filed down so that when they bite to intimidate, they sheep still get the same affect, but can slip away and the skin isn't broken.

He's not a trainer, he literally lives the life up in the mountains, with his sheep, and a german Shepherd side kick. I don't know how common this practice is though.

It's more likely natural progression, how old is he?

I have seen bait dogs with their teeth filed down, but most likely the teeth were worn down from chewing on the kennel, or something similar.

My ACD spent 2 1/2 months in a kill shelter, and spent her entire time chewing on the kennel. By the time I got to her, she had worn down her left two canines past the pulp and it was exposed. Needless to say, two root canals were in order when the pulp began to rot.

This may happen from wear and tear. An awful lot of owners let their dogs chew on tennis balls. The surface of the tennis balls actually acts like a file on their teeth. We have never let any of our dogs have a tennis ball to play with.

It's most likely natural wear from chewing on things. I saw a dog that had its teeth worn down to nubs from chewing on its kennel. It's especially common on dogs that had been neglected and chewed on inappropriate things out of boredom.

most likely chewing on hard things.

they often find inappropriate habits of chewing and this causes the teeth to wear down.

i have heard of sharpening teeth , but only on pit bulls .

They were more than likely worn down from chewing on inappropriate things.

Yes, actually I have heard of people doing this, I have never seen it myself, confirmed, but I have indeed heard of this before.
