I purchased a Tumble dryer recently. It broke down, can I demand an exchange or will it have to be fixed?

An engineer came out to fix it but it needed a new part which I have been waiting for now for nearly 3 weeks, the catalogue are speaking to the manufacturers on my behalf but don't seem to be getting anywhere, and I am desperate, 5 children and need to get my clothes dry.

I would tell them that 3 weeks is unacceptable. Under the sale of goods act it was not fit for purpose. Presuming you have been using it within the manufacturers guidelines ie not overfilling, cleaning filters etc then you should have no problem. It should last at least a year which is the standard manufacturers warranty. I would tell them they have another 5 working days to get it repaired. If they can't do this then I would request a replacement machine free of charge or a full refund. Maybe you should contact the manufacturer direct?

In the UK, your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. If the dryer has broken down through mechanical defect, you can demand a refund, replacement or repair from the retailer. If you opt for a repair, then this should be done in a timely fashion and to a good quality. You should talk to the retailer first to see if they are willing to provide a replacement because their contract is with the manufacturer and they can get a replacement from the manufacturer. To complicate/assist matters further, if you paid by credit card, your contract is in fact with the credit card provider and they will often take on the case for you and provide you with a refund. If all else fails, you can contact trading standards who can give further advice together with example letters that you should send.

I don't know if this is the same in other countries.
