what is a mitzvah project?

I was reading a book, in which the main character and her family are Jewish. While I am familiar with a bar/bat mitzvah, I am not sure what a mitzvah project is. I tried to google it, but all I got were Mitzvah project ideas. I asked a Jewish friend of mine, but he said he wasn't really sure. I was hoping someone could kind of fill me in. I realize this is, quite possibly, a "stupid" question, but I have never come across this before today. thanks!

The term mitzvah has also come to express an act of human kindness. According to the teachings of Judaism, all moral laws are, or are derived from, divine commandments.

Welcome to our Mitzvah Project website!

As we prepare for our Bar- and Bat- Mitzvahs, we have been thinking long and hard about the mitzvah project that we would engage in. When we learned about the children of Santa Anita, Guatemala and their struggles, not just to survive, but to obtain the kind of education that many of us take for granted, we knew that was where we would start.

The thirty-two Mayan families living in the mountains of Guatemala, are survivors of a genocide attempted against them by the Guatemalan military dictatorship in the 1980's. Today, these hardworking coffee and banana growers struggle to survive in the day-to-day labors of their business while trying to create new opportunities for their children through education.

“Our Vision: Growing up, most of us never had access to a good education; many of us "Our Vision: Growing up, most of us never had access to a good education; many of us never completed elementary school. Now, after the war, our vision is to provide our children with an excellent education so that they may be able to pursue a profession and someday return to benefit their people. Although we may never be able to escape a life of low-paying manual labor, our children will now have the opportunity to choose what kind of life they would like to live. In pursuing this goal, we have constructed three schools in the community: a preschool/daycare center, elementary school, and middle school. Every child of age studies, and children from the surrounding fincas [a rural property in Spanish America] are also educated here.”

OK, I'm speaking here as a religious jew, although I'm not sure if I've ever heard that precise term, so I'm kinda guessing.

It could also be a general project, in which students (or anyone) decide to do something good for others.

For example: Bob and Fred (standard jewish names, right?) knew that there was an old woman on their block who was lonely and couldn't leave her home, so they decided to take care of her and make her their mitzvah project.

This project might be a personal choice, or mandated by a school (for example, many schools in NY have similar ideas, though they call them "chessed projects," where students need to spend a certain amount of time each week doing some kind of good deed.

It's basically a community service project done as part of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Ritual-it's quite important in becoming an adult in Jewish society.

And...Basement? Mitzvah means, "Commandments." Bar Mitzvah means, "Son of the Commandments." Not good deeds.
