9 month old baby fighting breastfeeding!?

I have been successfully breastfeeding for 9 months now with not too many problems. All of a sudden, in the past week, my son arch his back and not latch on. I have to literally fight with him to get him to eat. I can tell that he's hungry as he's screaming and signing for food. He's been eating his solid foods okay, but it's just frustrating that he won't eat. Does anyone have any advice?

Sounds like a nursing strike..Just keep trying, and he will get over it. The LeLeche website has info on this, or you could just do a search..He will get over it soon, and go back to happily nursing..

Take him in a quiet room alone to nurse. Mine all became too nosey to nurse around that age. After I had several children and could no longer leave them to nurse the youngest, I would pump and give milk to the child in a cup so they could be nosey and drink breastmilk too! This does often pass, and your baby will love to snuggle with you again one day soon! You could also allow him to try a different position, like sitting up (on the floor between your legs) or standing. This too will pass! Good luck!

Could you possibly have eaten something or taken medication that makes the milk taste bad to him? I've had that happen? Check his mouth for rash, white spot, sores. Sometimes that can make them not want to eat too.

Congrats for nursing so long and keep it up! I nursed 3 babies for 15 months each!

My daughter did that too around that age. She would mostly do it though when she was tired. I think that she knew that it would put her to sleep so she would fight it.

What worked for us was to go to a quiet dark room with no distractions and I would lay down with her while she nursed.

    Just keep trying. HTH.

we had this same problem only ours wasnt a stage, he just wouldnt do it anymore, was constantly fighting me and biting me and would go way beyond his regular eating times, if we were in public, no way there were too many distractions, i ended up giving him expressed milk and pumping but i was pumping multiple times a day and only getting a couple of oz a day, so that worked for awhile with my frozen supply but eventually ran out and had to swtich to formula, but i made it 9 months so im pretty proud of myself, if you think that your baby isnt going to thrive from breastmilk anymore, i would say its ok to switch, youve gone a long time and its best to do it 1-2 years but not if your baby isnt thriving from it anymore and you shouldnt have to starve and battle your child daily to get them to eat.. good luck hope this helps

Sounds like breast refusal. Very common, it happened to us too!

This is a link to an ABA (Australian Breastfeeding Association) article on teh subject:

Good luck and keep up the good work!:)

Although BF babies are less prone, check for an ear infection, too. The sucking may be aggravating pain in an ear, especially since he's eating his solid foods well.

If you are really still wanting to nurse then just keep trying and make sure to drink plenty of water so that you have plenty milk.

However, it is a lot easier to wean a child from breastfeeding when they go through this phase rather than trying to wean them when you are ready. My son weaned himself at 10 months old and went directly to whole milk and a regular diet which was approved by his doctor.
