Why do you think domestic violence is taken so lightly now a days?

I remember when I was a kid that was a hush hush subject because if it got out the parties involved were headed straight to jail!!!

I dont think its taken lightly at all. Rather, I think its good that its no longer taboo to talk about. Back in the day, people kept their mouths shut about the abuse they suffered at home and had no resources to get help. And they didnt keep quiet about it because they knew they would go to jail. Rather the victims were ashamed and for the most part society had deemed that what happened in the home was no one else's business (remember back in the day a spouse didnt even have protection against rape, because they considered the marriage consent above any other situation).

Today, there are plenty of resources for victims to get help. Many victims still keep quite, and there is still a huge stigma attached to being a victim of domestic abuse, but you CAN get help, and you CAN speak out, and other people WILL help you (where as in the past they wouldnt because they believed what happened at home was no one else's business.) Spousal rape CAN be prosecuted. The state becomes the complaintant in domestic cases, so the victim who is dependent and recanting the next day cant take back the charges.

I think we have come a long way in battling domestic abuse, personally.

Ethics and civil institutions or social institutions to put it more bluntly.

It really depends where you live and how you live, location does seem to matter.

I don't think is lightly, hell no. I don't think so at all. It really works both ways. At least here in Chicago. Wanna play with the big boys, you wil be treated like one of the big boys. And it don't apply to any social status you come from.
