Some of my files were deleted by Vista. How can I get them back?
A few weeks ago, Vista decided to go crazy and deleted a bunch of files from not only my laptop itself, but also from the external hard drive plugged into it. None of the files are in the recycle bin of my computer; that was the first thing I checked. I have this nifty program on my laptop called "UnEraser," but whenever I run it, it comes up with a bunch of randomly named files, none of which it is able to bring up a preview of, leaving me unable to tell if any of these files are the ones I would like back. I WOULD restore them all, but the total size of all these files is more than my external and internal hard drives can hold! And as a poar collij stoodint, I really can't afford to go buying another external hard drive, so... any advice? I would reeeeeeeeeeeeally like these files back!!!

I like your Boston "poar collij stoodint".
Depending on how long and how much you've used your PC after the time the files we're deleted will increase or decrease the likelihoodof getting them back. IF they we're deleted Vista may have started to place other files in their location. I'd suggest you use a free tool called Recuva (link below), realistically, trying to get previews won't be possible for most recovery software as you're dealing with such fragile information that might possibly be corrupted.
You'll have to recover so much at a time and check bit by bit unfortunately.

create a file on your desktop and restore half the files... if none of them are it... delete them and restore the other half...
The good thing about "a simple delete" is that the files are never really gone. That is how the UnEraser can find all those "deleted files" so good news, there's a pretty good chance your files are there.
bad news is you're actually gonna have to look for them.
If you know the file types you can guesstimate the file sizes and narrow your search that way... you can also "sort by type" and that will segregate your files into mp3, word etc.
Good Luck!

Well it sounds like you are on top of it really. Maybe you could restore some and compress them? sounds like its going to be a real hassle finding your files if you dont know what they were called though. Good luck!
Sorry for not being any help.

If it deleted it, then you can't get it back.
