does anyone believe that most people can overcome substance abuse on their own after many years of sobriety?

    Sure, but why go through the mental fatigue of knowing you had a problem in years past and try oh-so-hard to control your drinking in the "social" scene.

    Not worth the work. Most people I see relapse into a full blown user, and are dead within 10 years. No joke.

    Besides, find yourself and be yourself sober. Alcohol gets ya nowhere.

    yes, if they are over it. But if they're still going to let alcohol make them lose control, then no.
