What can happen to a 22 year old female with a blood pressure of 170/110?

Can anyone tell me exactly how dangerous this is and what can happen from having such high blood pressure?

Update:

Ok, thanks....it's not me, a friend of mine is in the ER right now. Her blood pressure has been elevated for a while now, they are doing blood work and checking for bleeding in her brain, etc. I'm just worried about her and the doctors aren't moving quick enough for me LOL

I am 20 and had that exact same blood pressure reading for almost a year. The doctor figured it was from my birth control pill (Alesse) so she switched me to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which helped a little. You also need to stop using any decongestants or over-the-counter pain meds, like Advil, nasal sprays, cough syrup, etc because they can all raise blood pressure. My problem was that I was using nasal sprays regulary, unaware they could raise my blood pressure. You should also take a good look at your current salt intake. You may also need to lose weight if that is an issue for you (certainly not an issue for me, I am on the slender side). Keep in mind high blood pressure may be inherited in your family or you may be under lots of stress.

However, after all this, my blood pressure was still about 150/90 so I was finally put on blood pressure meds that I am still on. You may need to talk to your doctor about this.

They tell me blood pressure as high as ours is dangerous, that it can cause strokes or heart attacks. Basically the blood getting pushed through your veins that harshly is hard on your heart and tears away at the insides of your veins. But I dealt with it for a year before I was put on meds for it, and I didn't experience any of these issues. Probably because I am still young.

Good luck, you should see a dr. to get your blood pressure down before you get older and it's too late.

For you it sounds like awful bad luck. You don't have any of the major risk factors except perhaps a father with hypertension. It will continue to rise as you age. Your veins and arteries deteriorate with age, and thus, your blood pressure increases. It's mild right now, you probably don't have to go on meds, but in a few years, you might want to consider hydrochlorothiazide. Caffeine does increase blood pressure.

Worst cause scenario is that you have a major stroke and could possibly die.

Long term effects could be permanent kidney damage resulting in you possibly having to live on dialysis for the rest of your life.

This is a really bad blood pressure, you should immediately get this checked out by a physician or and APN.

    This is a raised BP.

I assume that it was measured accurately on more than one occasion.

A raised BP is not a diagnosis-it is the result of change in your body.

It therefore needs to be assessed and investigated by your doctor to find the cause. If a cause is found then the cause answers your question

wellll, she can have a major stroke and DIE. That is a grossly elevated blood pressure, and if it is true, you should be in hospital getting treatment.
