R&P: Do you think older people automatically assume that younger people have bad taste in music?

I've been searching around a lot for songs to play at a party that I'm throwing for my younger sister and a lot of the times I'll see a question like "What are some good songs for a sweet 16?" and most of the answers are something along the lines of "Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus are what teens like." and I wonder why people automatically assume that *every* teen likes that cra--I'm sorry, *music*?

I prefer listening to Classical Music and I'm 17. My younger sister who is 11 probably knows more about Classic Rock than any adult I've ever met. My best friend is 15 and she's so obsessed with Punk Rock--actual Punk as in The Ramones and The Clash punk--that it's annoying. Added to that, the only people who I know who even listen to the Jonas Brother or Miley Cyrus or any of that other junk are posers in every other area of their life and are--I think--only listening to them because they want to be more popular. Not even my 8 year old niece likes them!

So, what do you think? Do you think all young people have bad taste in music, just a majority? Do you ever think less of a person's musical tastes if you find out their age?

BQ: What's your song of the day?

BQ2: What song makes you happy?

BQ3: Any bands you want to share? Any songs?

From what I've seen in this section over the last three years...the majority of young persons (20 years and under) listen to much of what us older people grew up listening to anyways, Lol...so to answer you question (from an older persons perspective)...no.

  • A lot, sure, but there's a lot of young people in the world. And... a lot of those young people have great taste in music. Of course, "bad" and "good" is just an opinion.

Also, I should add, a lot of times it's the other way around. Young people assume older people listen to horrible music... the worst part is that when they actually find out what they like (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc., if they're rock fans, of course) they don't think that anymore -- they KNOW it's horrible. Cause we know that the Jonas Brothers are the best. Now those are some real rock stars... David Gilmour who?

No, I don't think all young people have crappy taste in music; I'm 16 and I love classical music and latin(not Enrique Iglesias, Shakira or Nelly Furtado...I'm talking about Chavela Vargas, Lila Downs, Lola Beltran, ect.), I have a friend that's 11 and loves bands like Led Zeppelin, Queen and The Who.

I'm a bit more understanding of younger kids when it comes to their music tastes, I have a younger cousin(13) that was obsessed with the Jonas Brothers, but she heard me playing "I Wanna Have Something to Do" by The Ramones, and now she's in love with The Ramones.

BA: I Wanna Be Sedated-The Ramones

    BA2:Soap Factory-Zoinks!

    BA3:Cultura Tres

P.S. I think that kids can learn from adults, because like teens, adults can surprise you with their tastes in music. Take my Spanish teacher for instance, you'd never think she'd be a metalhead, but she is and she's got me into a lot of really great Venezuelan sludge metal bands.

I think of 'younger people' as being under 13. Most kids below the age of 13 do have **** taste in music. Is it their fault? Not really, it's what they know and what they have easy access to on the radio or on TV so it's natural that that's what they're going to like at first. When I was 11, my favorite bands were Good Charlotte and Simple Plan, mostly because I didn't have any exposure to other kinds of music besides what was being put right in front of my face. Heck, when I was 13 and got my first iPod the first song I downloaded was Fergalicious because my best friend liked it, so it's really not their fault for liking **** music.

  • Hell no. Not all.

I'm 16, most of what I listen to is from the 70s/80s.

I mean, there are some good bands today, but invariably I end up listening to the old stuff more.

I think a lot of 'bad' taste stems from an unwillingness to listen beyond the radio, or a desire to fit in with other people. Because I get a lot of crap for not liking modern pop/rock or r&b, hip hop, rap, etc..and if you're not willing to deal with that..

Mind you, if it makes THEM happy, and if they're not making me listen to it, and if they don't complain about my own music, I don't care what they do. It's not bad to them, I guess, so live and let live.

Maybe it depends on where you live, too. I'm in LA, so there's a mix here, but there's a LOT of love for pop/rock like MCR, Panic! at the disco, etc.

    BA: Stray Cat Strut-Stray Cats

BA2: Lots of them. Music in general makes me happy.

BA3: Hanoi Rocks, Johnny Thunders, New York Dolls, David Bowie (if you've never listened to him, do so now..), T. Rex, Stray Cats, Yardbirds, The Kinks. Er, just type them in youtube, because I don't feel like choosing songs.

hah, that's like the default category here.

The answer is simple if you stepped back and took a rational thought about. Its called stereotypes. a. MCR fans are emo kids b. Emo kids only listen to emo Ofcourse that is far from the truth. You arent necessarly emo if you listen to MCR; Im sure as hell not emo and MCR is one of my favorite bands in that genre. I also listen to all sorts of different genres of music. Some of my favorite bands are Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Mac Dre, MCR, Lamb Of God, Fear Factory, Orgy, The Misfits, Stone Temple Pilots, Breaking Benjamin, Black Sabbath, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Duran Duran, Bleeding Through and even Frank Sinatra. I was raised in an environment where alot of people listened to alot of different stuff and I learned to judge music on its quality and not disreguard anything before giving it a non judgemental listen. Most of the people who dash MCR have automatically assumed "crappy emo band" without giving it that non judgemental listen. But on the flip side, no, they are not the best band ever and just because you think they are now doesnt mean you will in a few years. You might look back and think "what the hell was I thinking?" You ever heard of a thing called nu-metal? Just like emo is the scene for 12-16 year olds, nu-metal was the scene when I was 15, and yea it was cool then but now, I cant stand to listen to Limp Bizkit and Staind. What the hell was I thinking?

Older people in fact DO believe that young people have bad taste in music. Except for those who haven´t yet realized who old they are to listen to teen music. Of course music shouldn´t be given any labels, I mean you can listen to anything you want. I believe mass media has always imposed certain fashions, in this case music, like, there´s always been at least two bands in every decade that has shown off and was characteristical of that period of time... And if you do not like what you listen you would probably try something else until you find what you like.

I am 18 and live in South America, Argentina (sorry for any language mistake), and I love progressive rock, even though none of my friends listen to it. I love Pink Floyd, Genesis, Emmerson Lake and Palmer, etc... I really REALLY love that music and I really dont care if people dont know it and do not like it, in fact, it makes me like it even more!

    BQ: Cuckoo Cocoon - Genesis

BQ2: Peter Gabriel - Solsbury hill

BQ3: You should deffinitely listen to Genesis´ selling England by the pound

    bye!

I don't think they think we have bad taste in music (unless it is like the Jonas Brothers or those Disney pop-singers, they suck for a FACT) I think it's just that they're older, younger age music is too extreme for them, and they'd rather listen to something "soft and settle." Now I'm not saying all adults listen ot softey, some listen to the line of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Black Sabbath. Those bands don't have an age limit. If you want an example of sh!tty teenager-scene music, here's your list:

    Avenged Sevenfold

    Linkin Park

    Bullet for my Valentine

    Fall out Boy

    Limp bizkit

    Hollywood Undead

    Good Charlette

    My Chemical Romance

    Brokencyde

    Jonas brothers

    Miley Cyrus

    Solena Gomez

    Taylor Sh!t (haha)

Lady Gaga...etc. You get the point.

I have three 10 year old cousins and they know better than to listen to this garbage. Unlike my sister, who listens to nothing but Disney-pop stars and Country - Pop singing rednecks.

People (as in clueless middle school pre-teens and noobish High school Freshman) only listen to these bands just so they can fit in and look cool in front of they're friends, when really they're just dumba'sses who don't know a thing about music and they don't know it. Now I don't mind people listening to pop (I still hate it) but if they do at least avoid those mainstream Disney-Pop failures.

I guess the culture of teens is just going to grow worse, they've plagued this world with scene-fashions, Yu-gi-oh hair cuts, butt-tight skinny jeans, and fad-ish emo-scenecore bands just to make themselves look "hardcore" when really they look like idiots. When will this world learn. Ugh.

    BQ: No song, Band. Gorgoroth.

BQ2: Ashes of the wake by Lamb of god, such an amazing song.

BQ3: Chimaira, Lamb of god, Suicide Silence, Cradle of Filth, Gorgoroth, Devil Driver.

No and if you think that you could not have been here long I have a lot of contacts who are in there teens and twenty's and they seem to know the music as well as us older folks, I could not have said it much better than Smiley up above'

BQ: by Them Crooked Vultures....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hd5mZlPS4U and this is a brand new song.

BQ2: way to many to mention

BQ3: I just did with the first BQ:

    take care

    dave

  • some older people do, but its because the majority of people our age enjoy what they, i and you would consider to be in poor taste (i'm being carefull not to be an "elitest")

but for example because of me, my dad has given some modern bands (the white stripes, wolfmother...) a chance, but he would agree that music that is currently "the norm" among teens kind of well, sucks.

by the way classical music is great

BQ: What's your song of the day?

    how about

Is is - Yeah Yeah Yeah's

BQ2: What song makes you happy?

Fell in love with a girl - The White Stripes

BQ3: Any bands you want to share? Any songs?

i know their already pretty popular but how about the strokes in case by any chance theres someone out there who hasn't heard of them
