Vacation planning tips for San Francisco in June?

I'm planning a family vacation (kids age 16 & 8) to San Francisco next June. I'd appreciate any suggestions for things to do and see and good hotels, especially those near public transportation in case we don't rent a car. Any advice or things not to miss or definitely to avoid? Probably also going to try to see Yosemite for part of the trip. We're from Texas and this would be first trip to CA. Thanks in advance!

Adam J has a pretty good list there, here's some others:

    - Go to Marin, Sausalito and Tiburon in particular

    - The Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park

    - Go to Union Square and shop, The Embarcadero, North Beach, Marina (Chestnut st. Union st.), check out the insane mansions and hills of Pacific Heights.

    - Visit the Painted Ladies (in Alamo Park)

    - The Presidio

    - Beaches (don't expect warm water): Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, Stinson (in Marin, very windy road)

    - Angel Island

    - Coit Tower

    - Wine country in Napa (about an hour north)

There's soo much! Oh, and Yosemite is kind of a far road trip...have fun!

    Stuff you should definitely do:

    1) Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge

    2) Head over to Marin and visit the Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, and Mt Tamalpais.

    3) Ride a Cable Car and visit China Town.

    4) Wander around Haight Ashbury and Golden Gate Park.

    5) Head down to Monterey via the coast. (When you get there visit the aquarium and Point Lobos.)

    6) Head to Yosemite--it's one of the two most spectacular sights in North America IMHO.

    Other stuff:

    1) Alcatraz--wandering around an old prison doesn't do it for me, but if you enjoy it then by all means visit. Make sure you get tickets well in advance.

    2) The Legion of Honor--one of the city's two major art museums. Very good, but not quite a must do attraction for people who aren't art buffs.

    3) Pier 39 and Fisherman's Warf--frankly a massive tourist trap, but a fun massive tourist trap.

they are 2 very distinctive cities. I lived in SD for 3 years and am shifting to SF in a pair weeks. San Diego is exciting, yet no longer lots exhilaration for a fifteen 365 days previous except they surf or skateboard or love going to the mall (they have large ones). The pacific is chilly in SD, even in the summer season. The zoo is large, and Disneyland is ninety minutes away on a sturdy day. extremely lots it fairly is all there is to do while you're an adolescent, except you like Korean Karaoke rooms or are a youthful foodie (wonderful places to consume). San Diego is a sturdy place while you're over 21 or are 8 years previous. San Francisco is a lot extra interesting IMO if I have been an adolescent or an person making plans a bypass to to California. extra appropriate paintings galleries, lots extra distinctive and interesting inhabitants of individuals and has a variety of of background.

*_~ So glad that you're considering San Francisco for your vacation.

Try to stay in Union Square. http://www.unionsquareshop.com/

When you arrive at the airport, take the SFO air train that goes around the airport, then you’ll get off when you see Bart, take Bart to Powell Station (should be about $6-9 and it takes 20 mins ) that’s Union Square.

    http://www.bart.gov/ for schedule..

I just love the weather and the diverse culture here!! Traffic can be hectic but still bearable. Public transport is great! You can always take Bart, ferries, bus, taxi or cable car etc. However, if you don’t have much time or want to travel beyond the city – I think a car would help a lot. Yes, you have to pay for parking, but save you time to go more places faster..

Try the “City Sightseeing Open Top Bus Tour” which is about $30. “This unique open-topped bus tour of San Francisco includes four different routes, the Downtown Loop, the Golden Gate Loop, the Park Loop, and the Night Loop.” You're free to hop on and off as often as you want on the downtown loop.

Embarcadero is wicked nice, and it's not THAT far, so you could really just walk down it to the Ferry Building. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/

On Saturdays they do a nice farmer's market and you can get lots of good stuff. Walk down to Pier 39.
