How do you keep mold from growing on top of potting soil?
My African Violet has mold growing on top of the potting soil. Will it harm the plant and how do I get rid of it? I water it when the topsoil is dry by placing it in a bowl of water with African violet food so it only gets watered from the bottom. What am I doing wrong or is it the potting soil? The potting soil I used is specifically for African violets. Please help.

It could be the potting soil but it sounds more like it is dampness that is causing the mold. Is the plant in a place where it gets plenty of air circulation and lots of bright light?
This could be the reason.
Sometimes potting soil can get old and stale so maybe new soil and transplanting it would help.
Without knowing the age of the plant....I was thinking that if it is a mature older plant that has been in the same pot... it could be an accumulations from the fertilizer that is molding.
You could take it down to a good nursery and ask. I know if we could see a picture that it would be of help. I hope this helps!

it sounds like it may be getting too much water and not enough sun and air, Violets actually originated as rain forest plants and need humidity, if you put a larger tray underneath the plant filled with gravel and water it will give the plant the extra humidity it needs and you wont feel compelled to water it as often.
allow soil around roots to dry out before watering to encourage blooming and to avoid mildew.
go to the site below it tells you exactly how to care for Violets and other tropical plants.
I hope this has helped

Transplant the palm into clean potting soil, no longer Miracle improve. Wash the pot out with one million gallon of water with 3 tablespoons 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (first help grade) no longer bleach. Then once you get it transplanted into the hot soil, water in with the hydrogen peroxide water blend. Then sprinkle the cornmeal on good of the soil. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff
