Need advice on final exam!?

I am a third year University student. One of the courses I took this semester ended up being a complete wash-out, apart from the teacher being incompetent I also ended up being ill throughout the semester (it was just one of those terms), as a result I missed quite a few classes. Now the final is upon me and I am wholly unprepared and will likely fail the course. I am considering whether or not to just let my teacher know that I won't be writing the final and therefore land up with an 'incomplete' on my transcript. The benefit of doing this would be that I have more time to study for a very important final is actually relevant and crucial to my field, whereas the course in question is a form of elective.

My question is: Which is "better" on a transcript, an F or an "incomplete"?

Update:

I know I can't drop a course at this point, the deadline passed months ago, that wasn't my question. As for the C, it's highly unlikely, it's an work intensive course that I just couldn't keep up with this time. I'm completely lost on this one, this situation has never happened to me before and I hate having to consider choosing to fail...but it does mean more time to study for my req. course finals.

Update 2:

Mathlove, you're right, I didn't know what it was until now, so thank you for the clarification. As I mentioned before, this is all new to me, I've never been in this situation before and hope to never be again. I'm currently waiting for a call back from my department advisor so I can see what my options are, most likely I will just retake the course in the future which will negate the F that I will likely get.

As for the course itself - your tone is a little harsh so I feel I should add that I was completely prepared and willing to do the class but, in case you didn't read my question thoroughly enough, extenuating circumstances prevented me from maintaining my standard of work from the beginning of the semester. Please don't make assumptions, it's non-academic.

Update 3:

Also...it's "who's" not "whose", Prof.

I think that you should have a look at your undergraduate catalog. I suspect you don't know what an Incomplete acutally is. You are getting an F not an Incomplete.

Incompletes aren't given to students who don't take the final. An Incomplete is not a "final grade." They are given to students who have demonstrated a hardship that prevents them from completing a course by the end of the term. When given an Incomplete the instructor must give the student the opportunity to make up the missed work the following term. If the work is not made up the instructor can assign whatever the computed grade is with zeroes for the work not made up (generally an F).

Since an Incomplete means that the course can be finished in the next term, the student's work must be of passing quality prior to the hardship. They must be arranged with the instructor ahead of time and are ONLY given in very particular circumstances. Incompletes are not just "given" when a student doesn't show for the final. Since there will be an additional time commitment on the part of the faculty memeber they are given VERY sparingly.

If you were unprepared for the course in the first place, it doesn't sound like your work was of passing quality to begin with. So you wouldn't be eligible for an Incomplete anyway.

So you're earning an F. Don't get your hopes up for an Incomplete. It's not going to just happen. You'd have had to negotiated it a long time ago.

An Incomplete is better, in that it changes to whatever grade you earned once you turn in everything.

However, at least at both of my schools, granting an incomplete or not is completely up to the discretion of the instructor, and needs to be arranged ahead of time. Simply not taking the final would result in a failing grade.

You cannot drop a course this late in the semester.

Your going to have to try anyway and maybe end up with a C if you do well on your final.
