What is "the grain" when referring to black men's hair?

When some hair grows, it isn't at 90 degrees to the skin, but it points in one direction.
Usually, the hairs in one particular patch of skin will all point the same way, and that is sometimes referred to as the grain.
It's more noticeable when the hair is shaved, then allowed to grow back, such as the beard.
