Where did "The Silent Monks' Hallelujah Chorus" video originate?

Like everyone else who's ever sung the Chorus in church, I loved the Silent Monks' version on YouTube, but does anyone know who originated it, and when and where? All I could find from a long Google search was "a high school group."

I was 'aware of' Leonard Cohen many years ago, but never knowingly listened to him. The first of his songs I heard was 5 or 6 years ago : the Fairport Convention cover of 'Suzanne' {which I don't actually like}. The next time I heard about him was early last year, in a BBC Radio 4 Afternoon Reading, which was inspired by and titled "Famous Blue Raincoat". I'm afraid I have to say that : 1) I can't stand 'Hallelujah' 2) I'm not a fan of Leonard Cohen at all ********* Punch : Thank you :) However, the TUs / TDs are still playing up right now, and what we can see at the moment may well vanish later...! **In fact, having put that edit, I now have 0 | 0 ...

If you are referring to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCFCeJTEzNU it was performed at South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard WA. I don't think they invented it since the oldest performance I know for sure happened was circa '94-'97 (attended by my friend who attended there at the time) and the gag has been around for a while longer than that. But, judging by the fact they have nearly 13 million views on this copy alone, theirs is the most internet popular

I saw it performed at Pageant at Houston's First Baptist Church in 1997, but I know it had been done there prior to that. Someone told me it originated there and won some type of award.

It's far older than that. I saw it performed at Houston's First Baptist Church Christmas pageant back in 1989-1990.
