How do I convert miniDV tapes to digital files with the camcorder?
So I am helping a friend. he has this tape...
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MiniDV-Digital-Cassette...
and we need to covert it to a digital file without using the camera it was taped on... again, we have no access to the camcorder. We were looking for a miniDV player that also hooks up to a computers and will do the transfer for us. Do you have any ideas?

If you want to convert a few tapes, go to a video editing studio and tell them that you want to convert the tapes into DVD.
For every 60 minutes of recording, they will charge you $ 25. Tell them you want RAW uncompressed video.
This is the quality in which the videos were recorded. This also helps in easy video editing later on. Only problem is size will be bigger. One 60 minutes of recording will be around 9 GB of digital files.
Please request them that the files should be in a consecutive order otherwise you will be in a utter mess, if you had no prior video editing experience from tape.
You bring the DVDs back home, and then do whatever you want to do with them in you computer, edit and email.
TWO
If
1. The tape consists of confidential video not for public / people at the studio for viewing or
2. You have many such tapes, and @ $25, its very expensive, its out of your budget or
3. You don't plan to buy a digital camcorder
Then;
You need to buy a Video Editing Hardware or better know Video Capture Device and attach it your computer. After that attach you camcorder with the device's port and follow the steps in the editing software of the same device in your computer.
I suggest you buy any 1 of them
1. Pinnacle Dazzle DVD Recorder $ 50.
2. Pinnacle Dazzle Video Creator Plus $ 90.
3. Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac $ 100, if you are using a Mac.

Your only sensible options are to get someone to do it for you, which will cost, or get hold of another MiniDV camcorder. MiniDV is standard (so long as the tape wasn't recorded with the LP option) so you can use any MiniDV camcorder. Decks are available, but they're very expensive.
