if you are going to use an insecticide don't use boric acid ...it will leech away from where placed outside and act as a long term herbicide harming your garden. easiest way is to just use an approved insecticide, even diluted down a couple of times and drench the area of the path way. You can try some of the covered bait stations and place them in the area of the ants but they can be hit or miss when dealing with outdoor issues, as would be placing Amdro (depends on type of ant if they will feed on it and if it is not a vegetable garden). Boiling water sometimes can help if the nest if it is close to the surface but then again you have to carry a hazardous material from the kitchen and out to the garden without spilling or splashing on yourself.

ants don't have the ability to eat solid foods like malt o meal..corn meal..grits, then swell up and die.. if you are going to throw food away at least throw it to a homeless shelter so it can do some good

You've got to kill the Queen. Make this concoction, and keep it out for a while, but keep it away from children and pets: 3 ounces Jam, 1 1/2 tablespoons wet canned cat food and 1 tablespoon boric acid. The ants will eat it and bring it back to the nest, but they will all die from heartburn.

The only way that worked for me was to set ant baits next to their mounds. It takes 1-2 weeks but I tried EVERYTHING else with no success. None of the usual "eco-friendly" methods had any effect whatsoever.

    Dry corn meal.

When they eat the corn meal they will swell and die.

Some will carry it to their nests. That way the queen will eat it too. When the queen eats it, no more eggs and babies.

If you do not live where there is corn meal, a dry cereal that swells like maltomeal, or cream of wheat will work or wheat bran.

If they are sugar ants and do not take the corn meal, a little sugar added will work.

Baby powder will work. They do not like the talc in it.

Dry instant potatoes works on mice. Might work on ants.

Source(s): We have used these and they work. We used baby powder in the house when we were invaded by some tiny ants. A couple of huge ants, carpenter, I think, ate some cooked oatmeal on my cabinet and it killed them.
