It depends on how fast you heal, my ears heal fast and I wait around 3 weeks before going up. But most people wait 1-2 months before going up a size. I always use unscented lotion, I rub it on my ears and the taper before pushing it in and that always helps, also the material the taper is made out of makes a HUGE difference. Glass works the best, but it slips out easily. Synthetic, plasticy materials are a little harder on the ears as the can stick to the hole some requiring more force to push it through. And most importantly BE PATIENT! I can't stress that enough, if your ear's not ready to go up don't force the taper in, you'll know when you've pushed your ear to far. Ripping your ear makes the process of stretching take a lot longer and a lot more painful.

If you got your ears gauged right and they didn't bleed or anything they shouldn't take too long to heal. I'm guessing you got them done at a professional place, so they probably were done right and will heal up quickly. Of course, if that's not the case and they were gauged wrong and ended up tearing, you need to take the jewelry out right away and go back to the smaller size you had in before you had them gauged. But let's hope that's not how it is. How fast they heal depends on your ears of course, as well as your diet and health and things like that. As a rule of thumb I say they're healed when I can grab the ear lobe and pull on it and mess with it without feeling any pain. Also take out the jewelry and look at the stretched hole. If the inside of the hole looks like it's healed, you should be good. You will know if it doesn't look healed. It will be pinker and look different than the skin on the outside of the ear.

When you use the tapers, make sure not to force them through your ear. It's usually pretty easy to get them through if you do it right after you get out of the shower, while the bathroom is still really steamy. The heat will cause your ears to be a little more elastic. Also, you can buy some Vitamin E gel tabs, break them open, and rub the gel on your ear. That will help your skin to heal and stretch better. Don't gauge your ears after you've worked out or have high adrenaline. I made that mistake, and it was painful once I realized my ears were not ready to be gauged and basically just got ripped. It was easy to push them through because I had all that adrenaline built up and I couldn't feel the pain. If you can't get the tapers though right away, take them out and wait another day to push them through. What I usually do is push them through about as far as I can get them without ripping the skin. This is going to cause your ear to be sore already, so take a day off until it heals and then try again. Every day they'll go a little bit further until you can get them through all the way. And of course make sure to clean your ears once you have gauged them up. Right away they're going to put out a lot of plasma (commonly called ear cheese) and not only does it smell, it could hinder the healing process. I recommend cleaning them with a saline solution with no additives, but if you don't have that contact solution works surprisingly well.

    Good luck!

Source(s): I've gauged my ears many times. I know my shit. PS I just noticed one of the people above me wrote to use ice cubes to numb your ear. Don't do that!! The cold will actually freeze the skin cells causing not only more pain once the numbness wears off but potential problems with the skin cells surrounding your ear.

Your ears will want surgical procedure to get again to natural. My buddy had his ears gauged, does not love it anymore, and goes to get his ears closed again up. Only do that for those who quite think strongly approximately it. I'm no longer a large fan of the gauge, so i assume i am kinda biased, however its eventually your resolution;simply ensure its what you wish.

You should wait a month for your ears to heal. You can probably get an ice cube and numb your ear. But usually it only hurts a little when you go down a size.
