Could the Wings eventually run into a problem with all the player shuffling?

Was remembering two seasons ago in Nashvilles case, Rich Peverley was brought up and sent back a number of times during the year.. Something happened when he was sent down to the AHL that he had to get past the other teams interests in him before he could be called back to play for Nashville.. They had the cap space, but declined to pay out to Peverley because of a self-inforced cap..

Detroit is rittled with injuries and have really depleated the Griffins roster due to that..

With Detroit being assumingly much closer to the cap ceiling than NSH was, could they see the same thing with losing a player or two due to clearing re-entry? Do they have the cap space to absorb it?? Are teams allowed more call-ups due to multiple injured players and the whole thing is mute??

BQ-- Leading goalie in shutouts at seasons end??

I looked at that situation pretty in depth a few days ago since they will have 16 forwards and 7 Dmen (2 over the roster size) and then there is Cap issues. I am pretty sure they will be within 100K if they do this.............

First off- Abdelkader will be sent to Grand Rapids as soon as everyone is healthy except Franzen (which is early March) and he was supposed to be there anyways. So they will be OK cap wise (using LTIR) and still not exceeding the max roster size.

When Franzen returns they will have to send Helm down also! He is still waiver exempt (thats assuming EVERYONE is healthy at that point).......... he and Abby would finish the year in Grand Rapids, thus giving us the Cap Space also. Then those two return for the playoffs when their is no maximum roster size or Cap. This would keep the Wings DEEP, without exceeding the Cap or losing any player.

Source(s): As far as the call-ups and such from Grand Rapids... Janik and Newberry do not have to pass through waivers (neither do Abdelkader or Helm) I left LILJA completely out of the equation as it seems his career may be over. OR they will want him to wait until next season when they know he is able to play without possibly causing major damage.

Well first off, I'm a die-hard Wings fan and am astounded by the number of injuries the Wings have this season, nine regulars out, and they're still winning, for now. Everyone is definitely seeing just how deep the Wings are. But to answer your question, when a player is injured and placed on injured reserve(IR), his salary does not count against the team's cap. Right now, the Wings have nine regulars out:

Henrik Zetterberg -- Preliminary(Will have an MRI Friday, 12/18) Day-to-Day (Upper Body Injury)

Valtteri Filppula -- Injured Reserve (Broken Wrist--expected to return 12/26/09 vs CBJ)

Darren Helm -- Day-to-Day (Strained Wrist--expected to return 12/26/09 vs CBJ)

Jonathan Ericsson -- Day-to-Day (Bone Bruise in Left Leg--expected to return 1/5/10 @ ANA)

Jason Williams -- Injured Reserve (Fractured Right Fibula--expected to return 1/7/10 @ LAK)

    Dan Cleary -- Day-to-Day (Separated Shoulder--expected to return 1/12/10 @ NYI)

Niklas Kronwall -- Injured Reserve (Sprained Left MCL--expected to return 2/6/10 @ LAK)

Johan Franzen -- Injured Reserve (Partially Torn Left ACL--expected to return 3/1/10 @ COL, first game after Olympics)

Andreas Lilja -- Injured Reserve (Post-Concussion Symptoms--out indefinitely)

The players who are day-to-day still are under the salary cap, and their salary hit is part of the Wings Cap. The salary of players who are on injured reserve do not count toward the teams cap, therefore that creates space for guys to come up from Grand Rapids. Teams can call-up players from their minor league team(s) at their discretion. Those players generally have two-way contracts, but not all do. So no, the Wings won't run into a problem as far as injuries go..hopefully they can get healthy. They get a few players back in the next few weeks, but Kronwall and Franzen are still a long way away. As far as Lilja, I don't think he will play another hockey game. That concussion last season seriously injured him. After all, that's what caused Eric Lindros to retire early and not be near as good a player as he could have been had he stayed healthy. Anyway, hope that answers your question.
