What can be done for an adult with scoliosis?
I've known that I have scoliosis for years. When I was little I was taken to the chiropractor for treatments, but they were absolutely awful (I still shudder!), so I refused to continue. Last week I went to the doctor for something entirely unrelated -- ended up with x-rays and he said, "you know you have pretty severe scoliosis, right?" Apparently it got much worse than when I was little. It doesn't really bother me now as I've learned to make a habit of keeping decent posture, and it really doesn't cause a tremendous amount of pain. However, the doctor said that in later years it may cause arthritis, and he said there really isn't much I can do about it at this point. I think that might be a bit of a pessimistic view, so my question is... IS there something I can do to keep from having a lot of pain later down the line? I already exercise frequently, make sure to keep myself flexible and my back strong. What else can I do? Thanks so much!

I have scoliosis and it is severe. I am in my late fifties. Looking back, I would have liked to have done exactly what you are doing. I would also recommend directly to avoid weight gain. Gaining weight is often done to mask our deformity.
I do enjoy massage and it helps me. My personal approach includes some herbs and supplements, but you may not take that approach, depending on your personal views. Things like fish oil, Chinese herbal formulas like "Rehmannia Six", and Salvia miltiorrhiza are on my list these days. Generally avoid inflammation and excessive wear on your joints.
I still can work and do a lot of things. I expect to live for a while yet. And I believe that the issues will be trying, but manageable. Some numbness in one arm when I drive a car, some numbness in my toes that comes and goes, regular low grade pain within tolerable limits, occasional mistakes in movements and lifting that give me some stronger back pain. But all in a range of being manageable. I don't use pain meds often, but they are there if needed.
The scoliosis can give you some problems, but it is not a bad curse. If you do what you are doing and make some adjustments, the future will be okay. My grandpa had it much more severely than I did (severe hunchback) and lived until his late seventies. With a better lifestyle in other ways, he may have gone another decade.
Cheers. In the words of my grandpa, "Ain't we got fun!"

The best thing I know that you can do for yourself is to release the muscles in your back and neck. Why? If you think about it what can cause scoliosis? Muscles pulling your back one way. Tight muscles on one side of your spine. Once you release those tight muscles it should let your back return to where it should be. If nothing else the release should just feel good. Here it is:
For your neck:
place your hand alongside your head and push your thumb in under your ear and place it on the muscle there. Take your fingers and place them on the back of your neck on the muscles there. Press them together and hold a good amount of pressure on them. Then relax, take a deep breath an happening, the muscle going limp under the pressure. Continue to hold until the entire muscle has gone limp.
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.

You could look into other options, there are many different options now (Scoliosis treatment has improved greatly over the years and it's still improving) there's Spinecor (for kids and adults), CLEAR Institute, The Schroth method, or do some research yourself online and see what options are out there, there are so many. In some severe cases surgery is necessary but even that has improved immensely over the years, it can now be done minimally invasive in some cases!
Good luck

The asymmetric pull of muscle mass at the aspects of the backbone purpose fatigue. The discomfort demands' to be evaluated. Physical Therapy, began early, in the end will educate you plenty and the sporting events will straighten the muscle mass for strengthening a minimum of. Be certain to take a seat very correct, and no slouching. Mine constructed very speedily- from s curve in 10 years, to a 21 measure left bend, twisting and retrograding to be backwards. Seeing and figuring out this certain defined why I leaned in a chair to get at ease. P.T. might have helped and the fee might were brief-time period for all of the advantages I'd been getting. Muscle relaxants like methocarbimol and cyclobenzaprine are nice- simply take at eight P.M. in order that your'e now not too at ease to preserve onto the guidance wheel, within the morning and use while now not running generally, to preserve on best of the pressure and discomfort it motives'.
