What's happened to the gritters?

HI, I live in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, Scotland and since last week when we had black ice, then heavy snow, turning to ice, there as been no sign at all of any grit lorries.. This is totally frustrating as my pensioner parents are now stuck in the house until I am free from work and can take them out in the car for basic shopping.. Do any of you Yahoo buffs know if the local council gritting service is on strike?? There is a wee rumour going around that they are striking about overtime payments. I have searched the "dot net" to no avail and am still awaiting a reply from the local council.. If anybody cold let me know what's happening with the grit lorries, I would greatly appreciate it.If I know for certain that there is unlikely to be any road or pavement gritting in the near future, I could get together with some of my younger neighbours and we could attempt to clear the pathways ourselves.Thanks..

Well they should have no excuse, because the Councils today really revel in the fact that we pay more money to them but they do not provide all the Services now. In fact I wonder sometimes what they really do with all the money they get into their coffers. I never see any Road sweepers these days, and apart from having the Dustbins emptied once a week... my Question is... What do they do with the rest of the money they take off us.? At one time you would have never seen the pavements in the state they are in now,.... covered in snow and ice, because they are not touched either. As for grit... well that is an unseen commodity, and I think they have forgotten where they put it....

Some Councils have said they either didn't buy enough grit or that there was a shortage but I think it's more obvious it's a money/cost cutting exercise.

Our local council piloted a " request " for residents to cut the front verge to save the council money.

I think this is a if you grit your drive, front path & up to the road, then " we won't have too "!

Our council are supposed to grit bus routes we live on the route but no way has this road been salted.

The road is a sheet of black ice & the pavement is a death trap.

Even the able-bodied would struggle to stay upright.

Best for your parents that you run them around, for safety sake & your peace of mind.

  • The gritters have been out every day here in the Borders, but I'm convinced they aren't putting down as much as they used to. Some roads are still a bit iffy.

I did read somewhere that local councils do not have enough salt to grit the roads on a regular basis when we have blizzard conditions. Great isn't it. Public safety comes first I see.

gritters need to do the main roads first , snow falls everywhere unless there are thousands of gritters not every road will be done

i have black ice outside my house and cars are sliding all over the place

I live in mid-sussex UK and the amount of people who will be suing is staggering. Not so much as a grain of salt on the paths in the town centre and virtually impossible to walk without falling over. The A&E departments are under siege and I can't wait to hear their excuse.

    I haven't seen any either....

Last night we were all over the bloody road cause of the black ice......

There is a grit bin at the bottom of my road though......

Maybe we're meant to grit the roads ourselves????

You know I get my dudes who drive to stay put behind them grit critters cos I like trancing on the orange beacons and the whole sluggish

operation. I had a mate screaming at me for miles cos I was getting him stayed behind one so as I could keep the slow motion amber on white

illusion thing going. Cool it was.

And yeah hey where are they all gone to ??

    Maybe Afghanistan.

Source(s): that source was sativa herb 'grass' ! cool.
