Tenant moved out, left car. It's been over a month and the city says it needs to go. What are my rights?

I've been subletting a room to this guy for a few months. Last month he moved out on the 10th. He has left behind his car saying he has no where to park it at his new place but he'd take it some time soon. It's now been over a month. If the car runs it barely runs, and is now becoming an oasis of mold and fungi. The city has informed me that the car is becoming an eye sore and a possible hazard and I have 4 days to do something with it or I will be fined for each day it stays past the deadline. Tomorrow (Dec 21) is the deadline.

I've called him and left him messages but I've had no response. Apparently he did come by my house 2 days ago when I was not home and my friend who was here asked him about it but he was too intoxicated to comprehend what he was saying (seriously).

So what can I do? Could I call a scrap vehicle removal and get it taken away? I'm assuming he doesn't want it and has abandoned it.

PS. I live in British Columbia, Canada.

Update:

I was told to push it in to the street by a two people now but it's all locked up and I don't have a key. Also would the cops not ask me or the neighbours where the car came from?

Tow it. He complains... the authority insisted you take care of it (get rid of it).

However, I'm not too familiar with the laws up there, but... if the car isn't yours, and the police are complaining about it -- why aren't THEY doing something about it?

The car SHOULD be only the owner's responsibility... not yours.

Him not having parking space is on him... he doesn't live there anymore... so you're done with him -- and his metal.

The Parking Enforcement Branch enforces Section 13(1)(b) and (c) of the Motor Vehicle Act which prohibits derelict and/or unlicensed vehicles from being left on Vancouver streets or laneways. Vehicles left on City property for an extended period of time with an accumulation of dust, dirt or leaves on and around the vehicle, damage or in obvious disrepair and/or expired insurance are indicators of an abandoned vehicle. Vehicles parked on city streets must have valid registration and current insurance.

City of Vancouver By-Law 3519 authorizes the immediate impounding of vehicles, trailers or other chattels unlawfully occupying city streets or highways.

    To report an abandoned vehicle

Please contact the City of Vancouver’s Abandoned Vehicle Line at 604-257-8709 or download the PDF form and fax it to 604-257-8725. Vehicles driven without valid insurance should be reported to ICBC or the police.

    ■Phone: 604-257-8709

    ■Fax: 604-257-8725

    Abandoned vehicle removal process

First, an officer attends at the complaint location. If the vehicle fits the criteria of an abandoned vehicle, an orange informational sticker is affixed to the windshield and a violation notice is issued. The owner is given 48 hours to either insure the vehicle or move it off city property.

After two or three days Parking Enforcement will re-visit the location to check on the status of the vehicle. If the status is unchanged, the information will be given to the City's towing contractor for impoundment.

    * Note: Due to the high demand for the towing contractor's services, it may take up to four days to impound a vehicle

in many states a landlord can exchange maximum regulations with a 30 day notice. as quickly because it relatively is finished they are able to enforce those regulations with regardless of outcomes they reported till the state has a regulation proper to the $ cut back. If the regulations are already interior the hire they are able to strengthen into extra diligent approximately imposing them. i think of if the line is public they are able to't do something till that's a city ordinance the demands no parking interior the line. i assume you have a a million 365 days hire. i might attempt to holiday it out till the 365 days is up and then flow out. maximum possibly that's going to no longer get to any extent further appropriate and who desires to stay with numerous regulations. and not all landlords are jerks. I even have apartment property and am very easygoing, till somebody truly messes up. I also have a tenant who has desperate she isn't paying hire anymore. so now i'm no longer as easygoing. those strikes must be deemed unlawful in the event that they are in uncomplicated terms concentrated at human beings in a risk-free class, including in uncomplicated terms Negroes or in uncomplicated terms women human beings or in uncomplicated terms Jews or in uncomplicated terms gays. curiously like the owner is gently imposing them so which you won't be able to apply that.

Why didnt he take the car when he came there? Leave him a message that the city has required it be moved. Next time, leave the keys in the car. Let him know you will have it towed to a junk yard, if he does not respond or show up tomorrow. Can you move it to another street and leave it there, just in case he shows up later?

Call the City you live in and find out what you can and should do about it. They'll let you know.

That car is NOT your responsibility. If the city has told you it's got to go, then ask them how to legally get rid of it.

Push it onto the street. I'm assuming the car is registered to him, so when the cops finally come to take care of it and run the plates it's now his problem.

I'm not saying you need to do this but: I would drive it to the nearest Taco Bell or whatever parking lot in the middle of the night and leave it. Let your old room dog know where it is. all done.

Get rid of it he does not seem to be interested, as you said it is an old car. You have done all you can to get him to come & get his old banger of a car so get rid.
