20 gauge for ducks and geese?

i have a 20 gauge browning bps with a 28" steel shot barrel and a modified choke and i was wondering if that would kill ducks and geese. dont have the money to buy a 12 but my 20 holds 3" shells and i bought some winchester Xpert hi-velocity 3" 7/8oz 4 shot. they shoot 1500fps. will this set up do the job?

Update:

it is a non toxic shot and what do you think my range would be. im new to duck hunting

it will work fine for ducks. I'd not go goose hunting with that gun.

you are using steel shot, right? If you are finding the ducks to be high flying, going to #2 shot in steel

you might check out bismouth or some of the other more exotic 'like lead' non-toxic shot in 4shot.

check out black cloud, that is good stuff,

Spend the money and buy bismuth or other heavy shot, steel loses velocity too fast for longer shots.

7/8's of an ounce is a good load for grouse, not ducks or geese.

You can get 20 ga. 3 in. shotshells that have a payload of 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 ounce. This is what you should be using for ducks. You must put enough shot into the air to be sure that you hit something vital inside the birds.

You should get a 12 gauge for geese.

You want to kill birds, not wound them.

i took out 6 geese this year with an ithica 20 gauge and 7 1/2 shot (was hunting doves) and shot em on private land and it did the job just fine. a few days later i went out with steel shot loaded in the 20gauge and bagged me 2 more geese. so to answer your question yeah you can knock em down good with that. but get some heavier shot for the geese the #4 will work well for ducks though

I agree with akluis. It will work just fine with a well placed shot. 20ga is a very nice light weight gun that can effectively be used for ducks and geese HOWEVER, I personally would use a shot less than a #2 and would deffinatly consider using a heavier load than steel, like bismuth or another "exotic' Non-toxic shot. If hunting with someone with a 12ga you will be outgunned with your 20ga but you can have a very sucessful waterfowl hunt with a 20ga.... Practice a lot with steel as it travels a lot faster than lead but doesnt have the velocity to kill a big duck like a mallard or geese beyond 30 yards or so.

It will work for ducks just fine . Go with a bigger shot size and it should work for geese.

Possibly for ducks but definitely not for geese. That is non toxic shot, right?
