My refrigerator isn't getting cold inside. The freezer is freezing, but 10-20. It's running almost non stop. Y?
Any info will be helpful. It's running almost non stop. Will it harm the frige if it runs all the time? Should I unplug it? Can it cause a fire? I didn't sleep any last night, afraid it would catch on fire. The bottom section of the frige seems colder, the top, very warm. All my food is in ice chests. No fun! The repair man can't get here til Wednesday!!! Sears needs to hire more repairmen.....Could it be the gas that makes it cold.....iced coils.......How do I know if what I hear running is the fan or compressor? Thank you very much.
It is a side by side....Kenmore brand..11 yrs old...It has never had any freeon added to it.....I'm noticing a faint smell thru out the house, could it be from the fridge? Also, the bottom shelves in the fridge are slightly cooler than the top, if this helps. But the fridge temp is around 55º.....freezer is still 10º--20º back and forth...Thank you so very much!

First, the fridge won't catch fire. You might over heat the compressor, but it'll therm out. Is the fridge with a top freezer, bottom or side by side? If it's a top, the fix is simple. More than likely the cold air vents are stopped up with ice. Remove everything from the freezer and look for screws that will be holding the base of the freezer section. There should be about 6 screws. Remove the base cover and you'll see two cold air vents leading to the lower compartment. At this time you should be seeing lots of ice around the vents and possibly the main base deck of the freezer. Chip out all of the ice and everything should go back to working fine. If you have the other types, email me back with which style you have and I'll walk you through the procedure. The reason the fridge is running is because the cold sensor is in the refrigerator section and not the freezer section. It's not sensing the proper cold temp to switch off.

Shut the unit off, take everything out, and let it defrost for a few hours. It sounds like the air duct that moves cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment is iced up. You don't have to take anything apart and certainly don't want to start chipping ice out of the duct with a sharp tool. A bad door seal or a door that isn't closing properly is likely the cause if your unit just started this. And yes, the thermostat is located in the refri compartment and as long as cold air isn't coming from the freezer and cooling the refri the thermostat tells the compressor to just keep working.

It lost most of its freon. That cost you a lot of electricity to run this refrigerator with low efficiency.
