Well since Indie originally meant that an artist was on an independent label, I'd describe it as such.
An example of such an artist would be the Smiths.
BQ: Either really. I like both equally.
BQ2: I don't listen to a lot of metal so I guess I'd say Indie.

All indie means is that the band or artist is signed to an independent label instead of a major label.
I would consider Neutral Milk Hotel, The Black Keys, TV On the Radio, etc to be indie.
BA: Indie I guess, it just depends on the song because it's not like all indie sounds the same and all mainstream music sounds the same.
BA2: There's indie metal too. lol. So I can't really choose between them cause they can be the same thing.

Here are some really good indie bands:
Band of Horses
Blind Melon
Bombay Bicycle Club
City and Colour
Dead Man's Bones
Death Cab for Cutie
The Future Heads
Her Space Holiday
The Raconteurs
Stars
Statistics
The Temper Trap
The Thermals
Wolfmother
The XX
I love indie music because every indie band has their own unique sound, their own signature to their music. :) I prefer indie over mainstream because if you listen to the radio nowadays, all of the music sounds pretty much the same. The lyrics of mainstream don't seem to have a deep feeling or meaning to them.

I ♥ Indie Music!
I would define it as laid back rock. Also, the lyrics are usually very close to the band/singers heart. In most Indie music there is talking to a drum beat rather than singing. The main instruments in a typical indie band are: Drums & Guitars.
Some Indie Bands Are:
The Kooks
Arctic Monkeys
Florence & The Machine
The Klaxons
Albert Hammond Jr.
Mystery Jets

There is the old definition, and the newer definition.
Until the early 1990's defining "Indie Rock" was easy. It was any band that released records outside of the established major labels. This would include bands as diverse as Sonic Youth, R.E.M., The Pixies, Husker Du, Green River, etc.
In the early 1990's, as grunge began to get national attention, many major labels began signing indie bands, like Sonic Youth, R.E.M., Nirvana, etc., and the term "indie rock" became blurred. What would one call Sonic Youth, for example, when they were with Geffen, as major a label as they come? The lines were further blurred when major labels began running small boutique labels that had the appearance of being an indie label, but were really owned and operated by a major. An example of this would be Smashing Pumpkins. They weren't "indie" but they had more in common with Nirvana and Sonic Youth than they did with Aerosmith or Tom Petty. That's when the term "alternative rock" gained currency, to include both indie bands and indie-gone-major bands.
The current meaning of indie rock is nebulous, like alternative rock. The strict Catholic description would be to adhere to the rule that it is a band that is currently signed to an indie label. Another way to define it would be any band that records for an indie, used to record for an indie, has an indie DIY-type image, or is somehow associated with indie acts.
I try to keep it strict when I use it: bands signed to indie labels only.

Hmmmm I don't know what Indie really is to be honest, I just know what bands are Indie. When I first think of Indie I think of Indie/pop and Indie/rock cause those are the two I listen to the most.
My favorite Indie bands:
Phoenix
MGMT
Grizzly Bear
BQ: Indie
BQ2: Metal
