Depends. Some times it is necessary to get their attention. Other times they will just come to the decs. I am a long time ducks hunter. I have listen to hundreds of people calling ducks. Most of it is very bad. Just learn the basic quack. If you have luck with that then try other types of calls.

A good spread of decoys. Good concealment. Being in the right place are perhaps more important than being a good caller.

It all depends on the type of duck, weather, location, and a hundred other variables. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't.

Keep learning to call. You only need to learn the basic quacks for it to work.

The first thing to do is throw away the Knight and Hale. They are complete crap. Get a good call like a Haydel, Foiles, or Primos. There are other good brands as well, but these are my go-to calls.

The key to calling is not to call with your cheeks/mouth. Rather you call from your throat, almost like a grunt. When people talk about "blowing" a duck call, they do not mean actually blowing in it. It is hard to describe without showing you, but I will try. Purse your lips and place them on the barrel of the call, with the top lip covering half of the opening. Force air through your mouth, from the throat. This will give you a basic guttural sound that you can build from. Next, try saying the word "quit" as you push air into the call; never moving your cheeks. This will produce a quack. Once you master that you can move into cadences for hail and comeback calls. Series of 5 quacks will work fine until you get better.

Oh, and get a double-reed as it is easier to blow than a single reed.

Until you learn how and when to call it's best not to call at all. Even when you know all the calls and can blow them reasonably well late season birds are often call shy. They can also get decoy shy and become harder to pull in.

Get yourself a decent CD and learn and practice the various calls.

well i know very little about calls but if you do go out make sure you are under cover or blacken your face because ducks have very keen eye sight and a non camouflaged face is like a spotlight to them
