Two questions about cochlear implants?

My first question is, do I have to be deaf or hard of hearing to be allowed to have one implanted?

Second, are there any implants, or at least an add-on, that will allow me to use it as a two way radio (like a walkie talkie) just like in the splinter cell games?

I do not plan on getting one, or using it as a two way radio, I am just curious.

You need to be deaf... the cochlear implant is sort of a "last chance" option to restore hearing to the profoundly deaf.

No... there are no implant "add-ons" that allow them to be used as a two way radio. Because of the limited, specialized market for implants, there's not a huge market out there to make even simple, helpful modifications (such as a weatherproof processor). As it is, you could purchase a nice used car for what a speech processor costs.

It is really up to you, you should consider talking to all kinds of people -like getting more than one opinion such as those with cochlear implants still using it and not. Talk with audiologist, your doctor and research online and at the library. I am from a deaf school (3 years-high school), some of my friends have cochlear implants. Sadly some do not work but some do work. I noticed it works well on those who used to speak and hear but understands sounds and words too. Now, some times it does not work but technology is improving everyday. If it were me, I would stay deaf because I'd not want things drilled in my head. I even do not think these should be done on babies, young children unless they're teenager. Because it's their life, who knows what type of ID they will be. Good luck.
