Avenged Sevenfold:a heavy-metal band???...you're kidding, right?...?

How can Avenged Sevenfold be classified as a heavy-metal band, when even their music doesn't sound like "traditional" heavy-metal?...or even "speed metal"?...is it hard to describe or classify their music?

With a name like that, A7X(their other name?) sounds more like post-Nirvana "grunge" metal than REAL heavy-metal!

I don't know, though...to me, heavy-metal sounds like classic Judas Priest, classic Metallica(when Kirk, James and Lars still had long shaggy hair!) or even Iron Maiden(yikes!)!!!...maybe Twisted Sister(Dee Snider was a good example) or Motley Crue...

But for the L.A. Times to classify A7X as "heavy-metal" is shocking!...OK, maybe KROQ-ish, but...can this be considered an insult to its fans?...

Remember, I'm almost 40, and I'm used to some heavy-metal stuff(only certain bands), so please don't yell at me for being a little "ignorant", OK?

Your thoughts?

BTW, my condolences to their bandmate Jimmy...

Update:

So would A7X be almost in the mold of Christian heavy-metal band Stryper, then?...just curious...

BTW, thanks for the reference to their Wikipedia page...

Update 2:

What???...they're not a "religious heavy-metal band"?...hmmmm...well...it's up to you(their fans) to keep the spirit going!

Avenged Sevenfold's material spans multiple genres and has evolved over the band's ten year career. Initially, the band's debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet consisted almost entirely of metalcore sound; however, there were several deviations to this genre, most notably in "Streets" which adopts a punk style and "Warmness on the Soul," which is a piano-oriented ballad. On Waking The Fallen, the band displayed a more refined and fluent metalcore album that was able to harness the rawness of the first album and add more mature and intricate musical elements. In the band's DVD All Excess, producer Andrew Mudrock explained this transition: "When I met the band after Sounding the Seventh Trumpet had come out before they had recorded Waking the Fallen, M. Shadows said to me 'This record is screaming. The record we want to make is going to be half-screaming half-singing. I don't want to scream anymore. And the record after that is going to be all singing.'" On City of Evil, Avenged Sevenfold's third album, the band chose to abandon the metalcore genre, developing a more hard rock style. Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album, again, consists of several deviations to less consistent genres and styles from the album's main hard rock and heavy metal songs, most notably in "Dear God", which adopts a country style and "A Little Piece of Heaven", which includes elements of Broadway show tunes, using primarily brass instruments and stringed orchestra to take over most of the role of the lead and rhythm guitar. The band has changed considerably since its first album, which since then they have been characterized as a heavy band with screams and growls combined with clean vocals that one can expect from the metalcore genre.

Also, A7X is not their other name, it's an abbreviation of their name (the 7X representing Sevenfold, in reference to the story of Cain and Abel, Genesis Chapter 4).

Avenged Sevenfold has songs of many different genres. But with some of the music you're thinking of has a mix of heavy metal and death metal. but if you listen to death metal a lot, heavy metal bands may sound like crap. I honestly don't know what genre A7X would be. But know that they do play some heavy metal songs, yes older heavy metal was much better, but at least they are a step up from what's called "Metal" these days.

"They're just another mainstream band that pretends to be underground. They might've been metal at one point, but now they're just heavy progressive rock, nothing to do with metal. That and you have all these stupid POSERS and scene kids who play Guitar Hero listening to them which sort of takes away their metal credentials. That and didn't they win a grammy? Only no-talent poser bands win grammies!" I don't think you truly understand what mainstream is. Iron Maiden was underground from 1978- to 1981 before Bruce joined the band and went platinum with their release of Number of the Beast.

  • Well for the record, they did have some heavy metal influences such as Pantera, but I see where you're going with this...

My best answer to you is that they tried to throw in grunge material mixed in with metalcore and hard rock. And yes, some of their early material has avant garde elements mixed in. But yeah, I definitely see where you're going with it.

They're a band with many different styles such as heavy metal, metalcore, rock, grunge, grind metal, and even country.

  • Well, every song is basically a different genre...It's hard to classify such an amazing, varied band such as Avenged Sevenfold. RIP Jimmy, I'll miss you so much! <3

YES!!! finally someone else who sees A7X for what they are!!! i really don't know why they were classified as heavy metal they're not even close. i don't what happened, it seems like metal might be on the brink of death...again. what i''m saying is that what was once known as "metal" has changed. it was once bands like judas priest, slayer, and pantera; but now people think that bands like A7X are metal....it's quite sad actually
