When I started college last year, I made the decision to get a desktop instead of a laptop (or netbook). I'm happy with it, but there are somethings that I really miss about not being able to lug this thing around.
Like, you can't take it anywhere. Which means no typing your notes in class....it's gonna have to be done with paper and pencil. Which was ok for me since I actually prefer to write everything down anyways. So this is personal preference.
A laptop can be a real convenience in study groups (or the classroom) too since you can look up answers, info, definitions and even Yahoo! Answers on the fly.
For me, I wanted good specs on my computer (for 3d software/Photoshop/games), a big monitor and a cheap price. So I went for my desktop.
Honestly, it's all about your needs. But I believe most college students are probably better off going with a laptop.

As a rule, desktop is ALWAYS faster than laptop
Let me give y a specific example:
a 2ghz core 2duo laptop is SLOWER than a 2ghz core 2duo desktop
similarly, a 512mb9800gts on laptop is WEAKER than 5129800gts on desktop.
What is more, with the same amount of money, you could get a MUCH more powerful machine when investing on a desktop, not to mention upgrading on desktop is much easier and cheaper than in laptop.
dont trust what i say? go to http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ and configure your own desktop/laptop and see the difference ...
In conclusion, for those who dont travel much, desktop RULES!!!!

desktop, because there is more hardware that people can use to make it.
If you really want a laptop wait until i9 mobiles come out soon, because they are going to be really fast.
