What is modern feminism and how has it changed since the 1960s and 70s?
I've seen a lot of positive changes in the way men and women relate, in the freedoms that women now enjoy, and in the way that feminism is expressed by those who claim to be feminist. But I'm a guy and I'm not a student of women's studies or feminism or sociology, so I only have my own observations as a guide.
Most of the changes I've seen in the movement have been toward moderation. For example, modern feminists are less likely to be anti-male, they're more likely to embrace their culture's gender-based traditions (e.g., shaving legs and arm pits, wearing feminine clothing, and wearing bras), they have a much more open, less Puritanical attitude toward sex, and they're less defensive about being female because they feel more confident.
This all seems like progress if it indicates that many of the goals of feminism have been achieved. However, there are many ways in which it seems like women have backed off of some of their original goals for equal rights, and some of the changes I noted as positive might be signs of weakness in the movement. Do girls and women really have a choice about shaving, for example? Or has feminism failed to deliver on the promise of giving women a real choice about how they express themselves?
Whether you're male or female, feminist or traditionalist, I'd like to hear what y'all think. Thanks!

i have seen a lot of young girls pining for the traditional role of a woman, but still expecting the modern ,so this is a conundrum that the female gender will have to decide, freedom or protection?

What is modern feminism?
This is a term describing feminism from the 1960s to the present. The term marks the distinction between the original feminists (first-wave) and the revivalist movement started in the 60s. It also suggests that modern feminism is a single entity, not an ever-changing indefinable phenomenon, as most modern feminists would prefer people to think.
How has it changed since the 1960s and 70s?
Although overtly it has become less anti-male, behind the scenes feminism is more prejudiced than ever. In the past decade anti-male laws have been introduced in several countries, and this trend is set to continue (see section 4 here http://www.freewebs.com/feminism-evaluated/ ). The words of Prof Mary Daly sum up the two faces of modern feminism: "If life is to survive on this planet, there must be a decontamination of the Earth. ... a drastic reduction of the population of males. People are afraid to say that kind of stuff anymore" - Professor Mary Daly, from a 2001 interview with What Is Enlightenment magazine.

It is not true that feminists are hating men less and less.
Things like shaving are usualyl up to women and the evil patriarchy does not force women into shaving. Men also don't care if women dress in the same clothes for 2 days, men probably wouldn't even notice, it is much to do with women competing with each other and looking down on unnattractive women outside of their clique.
Women can judge each other on amny things too, men are not only the ones who judge women they do it to each other.
Source(s): Feminism exceeds equality in amny areas and it is wrong then when men question it we get attacked as "misogynists" and 'antis' the thing is the more time I spend on GWS the more I see feminists just hate men and I'm sure you will too. There's no evidence that modern feminists just want equality. It more like cherry-picking and man bashing going on and the most common "we don't need the men" it's quite childish imho. - Anonymous1 decade ago
For one thing, modern day feminists (I'm not referring to the average schmoe who picks up a dictionary, reads the definition of equal, which they can somehow relate, and calls themselves a feminist; I'm thinking of vermin like Harriet Harman and NOW) are practically throwing up on the line as anti male; they push things that infringe on men's rights, such as affirmative action, calling men privileged to justify it. Any father right's bill proposed will most likely be vilified by feminists. Men are simply people that can sent to the back of the bus if it boosts women.
Regarding things like shaving and acting feminine, women do have the right to or not to do such acts. I see these as more along the lines of acts of conformity, of which men are also subjected to. For instance, I do have the right to show up to a job interview looking and smelling like a woodstock refugee, but if I want the job, I'd better fix myself.
