Our basement is partially framed but it doesn't make sense. Can we redo it?
When we bought this house the basement was partially framed and stubbed already. Its been set up with nice, large main areas but then there are three awkward spaces at the back that make no sense whatsoever and would be practically unusable. We want to convert the basement into an open plan apartment but in order to do so we need to change the framing.
How do we know what, if anything, is a supporting wall? Do we need to have an entire wall as a support or could it just be a column?

Chances are that you can simply remove any studding in the basement. Just have to check to make sure that it is just studding. Center spans of most home are supported on carrying beams and posts, in the center of the basement.
Hope this helps

Feel free to email me some pictures and I can help you figure out which, if any, of these walls are structural.

If it's a simple house there's one main beam running the length of the basement. Any wall beneith is beam can't be removed without installing supporting loly posts. These posts should sit on footings not just the basement floor. For your own safety have a professional look at this for you.
