Horrible Smell in House?
No, not a new house. I have lived here for over 4 years. Have never had a smell in the house before. I have a full unfinished basement and there is no smell downstairs. I want to sleep outside its so discusting.
I don't know what it is, and I can't even find the source! I'm wondering if it could be a dead mouse in the wall, but I'm not sure what that smells like. This smells like rotten garbage. I've literally sniffed all over my living room on hands and knees and can't smell the smell near anything or anywhere in particular. Anyway, my question is, what's the best way to get rid of a bad unidentifiable smell? I am going nuts!!! Its in a living room without any water pipes attached or sewer pipes.

Check your toilet to see if it is wobbly on its base. Sometimes gases can escape this way, perhaps into your living room. Check your couches, many things get buried into the couch! Perhaps a sandwich fell down there.

If there is a crawl space under the house, there may be a dead critter under there creating the odor. Other possibility is gunk in the water pipes that can maybe flushed out with a lye type of product

I read about this woman whose husband insisted she leave the curtains after their divorce. She did. The ex-husband and the mistress thought that the curtains smelled like fish. They washed the curtains, had them dry cleaned, used special deodorizer - nothing helped! Finally, they bought new curtains. And the house still smelled like fish!
The ex-wife put fish guts into the hollows of the curtain rods. Every time she goes over to drop the children for visitation the house still smells of fish. And the cheating ex-husband and mistress still cannot figure it out.
Maybe you bought their house?

Burn candles. Charcoal will also absorb odors. Just open a bag and pour it into a box and let it sit in your living room for a few days.

No matter what it is, if you're going to solve the problem, you're going to have to find out where it is coming from and come up with an appropriate solution.
