What is the purpose of the really thin rubber-band looking armbands that football players wear?

I know that they have something to do with circulation, but what exactly do they do?

Update:

Also, do they have an official name?

Bands that are worn the wrist are for sweating. Most football players, tennis players, etc. will also wear tight bands around their elbows because with repeated stress the tendons of the elbow will slowly and painfully begin to pull away from the bone of the elbow. This is where the pain in your elbow originates.

With continued, repetitive use of the elbow the tendon-bone connection weakens and the pain in your elbow steadily increases. By placing continual pressure on the tendons that connect the Flexor and the Extensor muscles to the Medial and Lateral Epicondyles the tension at the point of connection to the bone is significantly reduced.

Nike Sells these bands as their "Bicep Band"

Other uses of the bands are their color! They use different colors to show rank like Captain, Reciever, etc.

Athletes wear these bands for a simple reason: vanity. Football and basketball players think the bands make their muscles look bigger. Bicep bands, like wristbands and headbands, also catch and absorb sweat. Bicep bands have no impact on the treatment of bicep pain, despite speculation to the contrary. Biceps tendinopathy, a disorder resulting from repetitive overuse of the bicep tendons, results in inflammation, pain and impaired function. Treatment of tendinopathy consists of reducing the inflammation, swelling and pain through physical therapy and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Despite speculated that bicep bands can help build muscle if worn during weight lifting, no medical proof backs up this claim. The National Federation of State High School Associations bans the use of bicep bands. It sees the bands as frivolous and has banned them. High school players are allowed to wear wristbands that are to be no more than 3 inches toward the elbow.

Most players wear something to honor a fellow athlete, like an arm band or even a number on their uniform somewhere.
