How do I rekey a Schlage lock?

I'm wanting to replace both entry door locks so that they're all keyed the same. I've seen the Kwikset ones that I can do myself but I'm really considering the Schlage locks. I've looked online to try and find out how to rekey them, but I cannot find anything. Is this something I can do or will I need a locksmith to do this.

Also, can I order replacement keys? I'd like to have 4 keys. Do I just make copies of the originals?

To re-key a lock you need the Schlage re-keying kit that costs about $400. I have one. My advice is take the locks out and bring them to your locksmith at a predetermined time so that he/ she can do them and you can be back at home and able so secure your house before dark! Why don't you have the locksmith come to your house you say? They get big bucks and the less of their time you use the more $$$ you can put into your house!

    Rekey Schlage Lock

If you're getting new locks, all you have to do is order two Schlage locks "keyed alike", with 2 keys each. There would be no need to key them yourself. If you need additional keys in the future, you can just get them copied at your local locksmith.

Whether you get Kwikset or Schlage brand, the same principal applies. The keying cost is negligible when you're buying new locks. Unless you plan on re-keying often, buying a keying kit just to use on your home will be more expensive.

First off you don't need to rekey the locks when you are first purchasing the locks. Purchase the sets that have a matching key code, usually printed on the top of the package, and key code, same keys. Depending where you purchase the locks, you can probably get duplicates of the keys made, although I think you'll get 2 per set purchased.

But if you are determined and have the re-keying set needed, I have attached a link to schlage for instructions to re-key their locks.

You can do them your self, but they are tricky. Locksmiths near me charge $10/lock.
