Night traveling between Baltimore and DC metro area using public transportation!! What are the possibilities?
I will be living with my boyfriend halfway between DC and Baltimore (we each work in one of the cities). Right now we do not have personal transportation and need to rely on public transit. The issue: what is the best way to get between the two cities - especially since he doesn't get off from work until 10 pm and needs to travel from baltimore to the DC metro area (laurel specifically). From what I see there is nothing that will run as late as we will need it (unless I am overlooking something).
Mind you I am new to this area and he is more familiar with Baltimore so I figured asking would be the best way to get a bit of help! Also, we just need to figure out how to handle this for about a month or so after which we will have a car which will help out!
Any input and knowledge is appreciated =-)

The MARC train might be a strong possibility for getting your boyfriend to his job. The MARC train stops in Laurel and it goes right into Baltimore. Laurel is on the MARC's Camden Line Route. It runs early in the morning until about 9am, then resumes service at around 4pm. Unfortunately, your boyfriend wouldn't be able to catch the MARC train to get home since it doesn't run that late. But the Camden Line also goes directly into DC's Union Station, so it might be a good way for you to commute as well.
Your man is in a really tough situation. There's definitely not much that runs between the two cities late at night. As others have suggested, Amtrak is probably the way to go. The best bet is to get off at either the BWI Airport stop or the New Carrolton stop (which is also where the DC Metrorail system begins)...Those are the two amtrak stops between Baltimore and DC and they are both closer to Laurel than Union Station is. It'll be pricey...$10-12 for a short ride. And actually, I'm not certain if Amtrak stops at the airport very late at night--so you should check--but I know the train absolutely has to pass through New Carrolton in order to reach DC.
The biggest problem will be getting your boyfriend from the rail station to home. New Carrolton has the Metro Bus Route 88 that goes from New Carrolton to Laurel, but I'm doubtful that it runs late enough. If he gets off at BWI, there's a Connect-a-Ride bus that he *might* be able to catch (the J bus) depending on which direction he's traveling from the airport. If he has to go east from the airport towards Glen Burnie, then he might be able to catch something at around 10:30p, but if he has to go west towards the main part of Laurel, then he would've already missed the last bus which passes through at around 9:30p. Another logistical problem with getting off at BWI is that the Amtrak station is on the northwest end of the airport, while the bus stops for the Connect-a-Ride are on the South side and is not a walkable distance. He'd have to find some other way to get to the bus stop.
Carpooling might be an option worth researching. Or if you have a neighbor or friend who wouldn't mind lending you their car every night so you can pick him up from BWI or New Carrolton. Offer to pay up some gas money...everyone wants gas money these days. Finally, an option would be for him to catch a cab from either the airport or New Carrolton...but it would be quite expensive. The drive to Laurel from either town is probably around 13 miles.
The metro website that someone posted earlier (wmata.com) will have all the Metro bus schedules and a "Trip Planner" that you can use to find out what bus routes provide service to Laurel.
The Connect-a-Ride site with the J Route is here: http://www.corridortransit.com/scheduleandmaps.htm...
And to learn about other transportation possibilities such as the MARC train, LightRail, CommuterBus, etc., you should check out: http://www.mtamaryland.com/
Good luck.

Check out Amtrak trains. It looks like they have trains leaving Baltimore Penn Station after 10:00 pm. For example, tonight (Wednesday) there are trains leaving at 10:43 pm and 11:38 pm that arrive at Washington Union Station approximately 45 minutes later and cost $14 each. I'm not sure how you would get from Union Station to Laurel. For that you may want to look into Metro (both rail and bus).

Clearly your best option is AMTRAK. Greyhound probably runs for less money, but it's no fun.
