In NYC, how long are you required to keep medical records for?

I work in a cardiac facility/nuclear diagnostic office. We were under the impression that medical records, BY LAW, have to be kept for 7 yrs, after which they can be destroyed.

I've been doing some on line research on ICANL (which we are an ICANL accredited lab) and i read that it may only be 5 years (which would be great, bc we can get rid of ALOT of paperwork).

Where would i find it or where should i research how long must studies be available in an accredited lab (Nuclear, Vascular and Echocardiography)?

This is the Dept of Health's website for NYS.... This page actually says that the physician must keep the records for at least 6 years..... and records for children must be kept until at least one year after their 18th b-day.

I don't know if you've already looked at that website, but I figured I'd post it for you anyway just in case..

If the provider believes that it may contemporary an significant detriment to you to check particular areas of the document, he or she will (legally and ethically) withhold those sections. ~M~
