Does Chowder always have potatoes in it?

Is potato a common ingredient to make the soup or stew a chowder? For true Gumbo, it must contain Okra, so I just wonder if it takes Potatoes to make a true chowder.

Update:

Gumbo is a fish stew native to New Orleans. What kind of Flower do I use - roses, daisys, lillies? I think you mean flour.

    A chowder isn't a chowder without potatoes. If it doesn't have potatoes than it's just a soup or stew.

    Not all chowder contains potatoes. Its the fact that its thick, but not as thick as a stew. Manhatten Chowder does not have a cream base to it.

    Chowders usually contain potatoes. Gumbos, on the other hand, don't always have okra. I like roux based and file gumbos.

    Potato is not required for all chowders. Here's some examples:

    ===

    Bacon Tomato Chowder

    3 bacon strips, diced

    1/4 cup butter or margarine

    1/4 cup all-purpose flour

    1 dash ground nutmeg 1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth

    3/4 cup canned diced tomatoes, with juices

    2/3 cup half-and-half cream

    Directions:

    1. In a saucepan, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels to drain. Discard drippings. In same pan, melt butter. Stir in flour and nutmeg until smooth. Gradually whisk in broth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in tomatoes; heat through. Reduce heat; stir in tomatoes; heat through. Reduce heat; stir in cream. Heat through (do not boil). Add bacon.
