I think Cotto has a greater resume at Welterweight & Jr. Welterweight than Mayweather, Mosley,& Pac.Thoughts?
Miguel Cotto's loss to Pacquaio has seemed to be an aggresive move for many to discredit Cotto's achievements. Cotto beat Mosley but he was never above Mosley in the GBP own Ring Magazine in the W.W rankings. Cotto's welterweight resume includes an annihilation of Judah, defeats of Clottey, Quintana, Margarito, and Msoley, all were in the top 10 Welterweight tankings and a respectable loss to Margarito and Pacquaio. Pacquaio only fought twice, beaten Cotto and De La Hoya. Mosley only has victories over Margarito, Collazo, and De La Hoya (once at 147). Mayweather defeated Marquez (natural lightweight), Hatton (natural J.W), Baldomir, Mitchell and Judah. Please tell me who has beaten the top elite welterweights? It's Cotto easily!
AT Junior Welter, please! Cotto defended his title 8 times while Pacquaio only fought once, Mayweather 3 times, and Mosley not even once. He fought bunch of nobodies early but not at 140 there were in between 135-138 non title bouts.
I am not saying Cotot is greater than these guys or better p4p. I am only saying he is greater when it comes to Welterweight and Jr. Welterweight legacy and resume. What comes out of this is Cotto may have defeats but he always took the best and never made any excuses for losing or not taking fights. He fought the best and deserve credit for having a greater Welterweight and Junior Welterweight resume than Mayweather, Pacquaio, or Mosley.
Please feel free to agree or disagree :-)
@ Maximus, I am in tears, this is one of the very few moments that I agree with you 100%
@ Ring King, with all due respect, I am still shock to see this side of you. I cannot believe you would accuse Manny of using steroids against Cotto. There are word limits so i wont be able to post as long as yours but I think your criticism should be directed at other boxers who tested positive. In this forum specualtions and guessing may matter but in the real world, it is what you can prove with evidence. I want to see Mayweather and Pac in court, let see who's correct when all people are under oath.

Cotto is underrated! He beat more welterweight champions and ranked ones than Mosley, Mayweather, or Pacquaio. But Ring Magazine all of a sudden worships these guys. I am not making excuses but Pacquaio fought Cotto at 145 pounds. Cotto was the champion and should have done the negotiations for the weight. Mayweather ducked Cotto because he is a coward. Then Mosley got his a$$ whooped by Cotto. Cotto is a champion in two different weight class and he fought the best. I am not saying Pacquaio is on steroids but I do think the 145 weight was more of his advantage. Margarito cheated so I think both Cotto's losses were controversial. Mosley lost to Cotto and Mayweather ducked the best fighters at welterweight.
This is not even a question when you talk about who has a better resume at welterweight or junior welterweight, it is easily Cotto over Mosley, Pacquaio and Mayweather.

I agree with Normen. Classic fights and legacy are irrelevant. Oh yes, you get credits for fighting the best and that adds tremendously to your boxing resume. Cotto defeated the top welterweights having fought almost all of the top ten. Manny may have fought only two legitimate welters but the point is, he has beaten Cotto decisively. So, how would weigh Cotto's achievement against those of Pacquaio and Margarito? These are two of the guys who defeated him. In my opinion, I wouldn't rank him above Pacquaio and Margarito as far as resume is concerned.

Cotto's resume is better than Mayweather's no doubt...better than Pac's...but better than Mosley's? I'm not too sure about that. I've always respected Mosley and Cotto because they've taken on the best and most challenging fights out there. Pac's only fought a real welter once, so he shouldn't even be on this list, Mayweather's fought an elite welter...well...nevermind that...but Mosley? Actually, a lot of Mosley's meaningful fights were at Jr. Middle, so I guess you CAN make a case that Cotto's got a better resume at welter.

Agreed with what everyone has said. I hope Cotto makes a comeback soon, I am definitely watching his next (guaranteed exciting) fight.
@Norman, excellent point, which is why Cotto's corner wanted to stop the fight in round 8. It was Cotto's call to play more rounds. I believe Cotto was right for fighting Pac (without hindsight, he was in great condition, and made lots of money), however the fight should have been stopped earlier as the outcome was inevitable to the audience.

Miguel Cotto has fought a who's list of fighters at Welterweight and Jr. Welterweight and that might be the reason he's in the predicament he's in now. I always looked at Miguel Cotto in the same fashion as a Fernando Vargas both fighters that took more tough fights than they needed to and ended up paying for it in the end.
Come-Forward style fighters usually burn out a lot faster in Boxing than any other style because of the aggressive nature of their fights. No fighter is exempt from being ruined by the rigors of to many tough fights and wars. You really have to choose who you fight and when you fight them if not you'll never last, its impossible to get to the top without a little bit of cherry picking.
At Jr. Welterweight Miguel Cotto went tooth and nail Ricardo Torres, was wobbled and nearly knocked out by Demarcus Corley. At Welterweight he was wobbled by Zab Judah and had to over come some nasty cuts, he had an extremely tough fight with Shane Mosley winning by two rounds in my opinion, he gets beaten half to death by Antonio Margarito, he goes tooth and nail with Joshua Clottey in a fight I thought he lost, then to top it all off he gets ripped apart by Manny Pacqauio.
Fighting tough opponents is great but you always have to pick and choose who you fight and how you fight them. I think after the beatings that Cotto has taken by Pacqauio and Margarito he'll never be the same fighter, he can still be a top notch name but who knows how his ability to take a punch is. Boxing is a punishing business with no 401K and retirement funds fighters have to be extremely careful how they fight and who they fight because when its all set and done classic fights and legacy's don't feed children, you really have to pick and choose your battles or you'll never last.

Cotto has been one of my favorite fighters. I feel he has been screwed in both of his losses. His loss to Margarito may have been the result of illegal substance in the handwraps. Although, we will never know and it will never be proven... I believe Margarito was cheating for that fight as well. In his defeat to Pacquiao.... it may have very well been that Pacquiao was training with illegal substances as well. People can say what they want... but I have been watching boxing long enough to know that Pacquiao has superb powers that are reasonably questionable. I have seen Pacquiao get hurt by Morales and Marquez.... and to watch Pacquiao walk through every power punch that Miguel Cotto had to offer appeared supernormal.
Cotto is a really good fighter with an excellent resume. Would I see him defeating an Oscar De La Hoya in his prime... I don't think so... but if he too were to use PED as Mosley did... maybe he would be able to defeat Oscar as well.

mayweather is not a welter no cotto no margacheato no mosely no pacquiao and pacquiao isnt a big welter why not fight pac!!!
however cotto is a true welter and mosely
but its true that pacquiao only fought once in welter that makes cotto's resume much good in welter but not overall and i dont think pac is a true 147 pounder i think he is a 140 lbs at his peak not 147 because his body is not that ripped in 147
just wondering why does everyone rank mayweather in welter last two years or so number 1 when he dont fight top fighters in welter just wondering

Why would you even mention an irrelevant fool who has suffered two beat downs?
Next you will mention an irrelevant fool who will not take random blood and urine tests.
Keep your eyes on the prize - Pretty Boy. He's clean, and he's the best.

YES, COTTO FOUGHT ALL COMERS. I TOTALLY RESPECT HIM AS A FIGHTER.
ONE OF THE THINGS I DISLIKE ABOUT BOXING THE MOST IS THAT THESE GUY'S ARE BUSINESSMEN AND THEY ALL DUCK AND DODGE BUT NOT COTTO.
TO ME HE WAS A TRUE (OLD SCHOOL) CHAMPION. HE FOUGHT AND BEAT THEM ALL, BRAWLERS, SLICK BOXERS, INSIDE FIGHTERS, POWER PUNCHERS YOU NAME IT.
I FEEL SORRY FOR HIM NOW BECAUSE OF WHAT WAS TAKEN FROM HIM BY MARGACHEATO.
HE JUST HASN'T BEEN THE SAME SINCE. TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, YES HIS RESUME AND LEGACY SHOULD BE BETTER THAN FLOYD AND ALL OTHER CURRENT WELTER WEIGHTS.
